But It Works?

Scientologists often claim that Dianetics greatest endorsement is it's success. However despite Scientific claims made for Dianetics, this success hasn't stood up to Scientific examination. In 1953 Harvy Jay Fischer, as part of his studies for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at New York University performed a study on Dianetics. Dr Fischer concluded that "1 dianetic therapy does not exert a systematic influence either favorably or adversely upon intellectual functioning; 2 dianetic therapy does not exert a systematic influence either favorably or adversely upon mathematical ability; and 3 dianetic therapy does not exert a systematic influence either favorably or adversely upon the degree of personality conflicts."

In 1960 three psychologists tested Hubbard's theory of engrams. A passage from a physics text was read to a subject in an unconscious state induced by sodium pentathol. During a period of almost six months, Dianetic auditing was unable to recover the passage. Hubbard continuted to maintain that all conversation heard during periods of drugged unconsciousness "recorded".

Eight Million Members?

The church often claims to have 8 million member around the world, however their own figures don't seem to support his estimate.

In the 1992 edition of "What is Scientology", the churchs introductory book, they claim 7,000,000 members and 1,502,274 hours of auditing per year. These figures, if true, would represent 13 minutes per member per year.

Heber Jentzsch, President Church of Scientology, explained where the 8 million fugure comes from in a 1992 ABC Nightline with Forrest Sawyer

"Sawyer. How do you get to call them members?

Jentzsch: Because they joined and they came in and they studied Scientology.

Sawyer: They took one course, maybe.

Jentzsch: Well, that's how valuable the course is. Eight million people, yes, over a period of the last- since 1954."

So, as you can see, the 8 million member includes many people who wouldn't consider themselves members, those who have left the church many years ago, even those who have died! Critics content that the true membership is bellow 100,000 worldwide, and this is backed up by a 1993 Church document announcing a push to get 100,000 active members.

Crossed Out Cross

Aleister Crowley, self described as "wickedest man in the world." is probably the worlds best know Satanist, and he designed this cross, the "Crossed out Cross". Critics wonder if this anti-Christian symbol inspired Scientology's cross. Hubbard was a member of Crowley's Ordo Templi Orientis, where he met his second wife, and spoke of crowley as "the late Aleister Crowley, my very good friend.".
