LAELIA FAMILY

 LAELIA RUBESCENS
LAELIA XANTHINA

ORIGIN
There are some 60 species the the Laelia genus. Among the showiest of all orchids, these epiphytes are found from Mexico to Brazil. They are closely related to the genus Cattleya and are used extensively in intergeneric hybridization. Laelia rubescens is found from Mexico to Costa Rica, in Nicaragua and Brazil.

DESCRIPTION
This plant grows to a height of about 16 inches. The pseudobulbs are egg-shaped and carry 5 1/2 inch leathery leaves. The inflorescence emerges from the apex of the newest mature pseudobulb and carries from 2 to 8 flowers. The 2 1/4 inch blossoms are clustered at the tip of the spike and are white with a blush of pink or purple. The lip is white with a purple throat and a yellow spot on the mid lobe.

LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
This plant will do very well in a somewhat shaded, southerly exposed window. It likes some sun but will not appreciate full, direct noonday sun. Good air ventilation will benefit the plant by cooling the leaves.

TEMPERATURE
This plant can tolerate some extreme temperatures, but does best in the cooler intermediate zone. Night temperatures should be within 50 - 60 F, although 50 - 53 F is best during the rest period. Day temperatures can be in the 70 - 76 F range.

MOISTURE AND HUMIDITY
The humidity should be kept above 60%. The plants like to be watered but the potting medium should be allowed to dry almost completely between waterings. In rest, only water enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling.

FERTILIZING
Feed once a week with a weak (1/4 to 1/2 strength) balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Decrease feedings when the plant is resting and resume when new growth begins.

POTTING MEDIUM
A good bark mix is recommended. The plants should be placed in the smallest pot that will accommodate its roots and still allow two years' growth. Best results have been with plants potted in hanging baskets and clay pots as this allows good aeration to the roots.
