OP

A fine morning in Tokyo. A girl is sleeping in her bed, murmuring something incomprehensible. An alarm clock rings but she doesn't respond to it very well.

Subtitle

In Siberia of USSR [], a man and a girl are seen in a car running through the wild land. As the man drives the car, he tells the girl to stop biting the nail as her nail is breeding but she begs to let her do so, "Or kill me, please." It is obvious she is mentally disturbed and, when he stop her forcibly, she bites his hand instead. He is angry, not at her but at those experiments that destroyed her sanity.

Just when the man finds a small mount, which means he has escaped successfully, a military helicopter shoot the car with a missile. The car is destroyed and the girl gets thrown away from it onto the ground covered with snow. The man is dead with a data disc in his hand. The girl approaches to him and picks the disc up when the helicopter begins shooting around her with its vulcan. It seems its pilot is enjoying tormenting her with bullets, rather than killing her straight away.

Just when the pilot decides to finish her off, a huge dagger appears from nowhere and stabs the helicopter. Then an AS appears, again from nowhere, to hold it. After some struggle, the AS [Armored Slave, a wearable combat robot, like... Patlabor?] throws it away to shatter and then kneels down in front of the frightened girl. The operator of the AS appears from it while two other AS's guard them from the reinforcement of the enemy. The operator turns out to be a boy but it doesn't ease the frightened girl, "What are you going to do with me?" He doesn't answer to her but injects an anesthetic to her. She asks his name in her fading consciousness and gets the answer this time, "Sagara... Sagara Sousuke."

The battle is over and the operators of the AS are back in their base, a gigantic submarine [the Toatha de Danaan] deep in the Sea of Japan. A man with blond hair [Kurz] teases Sousuke for his dramatic rescue of the girl, "If your AS had been M6, you'd have been buried under the tundra for ever." But Sousuke is "But with the spec of M9, I was sure I could do it." When Kurz makes an exaggerate description of the incident to the maintenance crew, a woman with dark blue hair [Melissa] comes to summon them, "Major Kalinin wants to see us."

Melissa, Kurz and Sousuke present themselves to Kalinin. Without a greeting, he says, "a new mission for you" and hands notes to them. Seeing a photo stuck on it, Kurz gets excited with a girl on it. Kalinin doesn't mind his overcasual attitude and continues the explanation. Their mission is to protect the girl, Chidori Kaname, from very possible kidnap from agencies like KGB. The photo is of her four years ago. The problem is their mission must be carried out secretly from even Kaname herself as well as the Japanese government. The tough task astonishes Kurz, but not Melissa. She calmly requests for the "Class B" equipment and Kalinin approves of it.

Although Sousuke has no idea, Melissa and Kurz know their first task is to forge a document; a certificate from a school to let Sousuke transfered to Kaname's high school. Also Melissa manages to gather things that a Japanese high school student might possesses [err... I'm afraid she is wrong. But then, why "Dragon Magazine"!? ^_^;;]. Sousuke find a condom among them and cannot understand what use it has to high school students. To him, it is an excellent tool to carry water in it when he is without a canteen ^_^;;

In any case, a helicopter takes off from the Toatha de Danaan to carry the three soldiers to a city where soldiers seems to be least needed.

Eye Catcher

Unaware of what is happening her, Kaname wakes up as usual... or attempts to wake up ^_^;; Being a very late riser, she needs to take a shower to really wake up. Of course, she doesn't know she is monitored by Melissa. She, Sousuke and Kurz have set up their base in a flat near Kaname's. Their plan is, while Sousuke attends to Kaname's high school to give her personal protection, Kurz stands by in an AS. Because their AS, M9 Gurnsbuck, has an ECS covering the visual light, it can stay near Kaname and remain physically invisible.

Kaname arrives at the Sengawa Station, where her high school locates. As she walks off the station, lots of men see her off admiringly. No doubt, she is extremely good-looking [I mean LOOKing ^_^;;]. Of course, Kurz is one of the men [note the fallen petals of cherry blossoms reveals the outline of the M9].

At the gate of Jindai High School, a teacher [Kagurazaka Eri] is checking the belongings of the students. Kaname has got a few strange books [apparently she borrowed them from her friend] but Eri lets her go. Then a rather young-looking girl runs up to her, "Good morning, Kana-chan!" She is Tokiwa Kyouko, Kaname's best friend. To Kurz's great surprise, as soon as Kaname sees Kyouko's cheerful smile, she unleashes her fierce fury against her. Yesterday she dated with a boy who Kyouko had introduced to her and he turned out to be an utter crap. Yet Kaname doesn't seem to care and remains cheerful [this attitude must be the reason why Kyouko is a good friend of Kaname ^_^;;].

In the mean time, Sousuke is stopped by Eri at the school gate. She is appalled with the "toy" in his bags. Sousuke explains it's not a toy but a real sub machine gun but Eri of course doesn't believe him. Kaname, hearing their conversation, shows her disgust, "Yuck, a military otaku!"

Sousuke is assigned to Class 2-4, whose members include Kaname and Kyouko. He introduces himself as Sergeant Sagara but, seeing the reaction of his new classmates, immediately realises he has made a mistake. "Please forget the "sergeant" thing." A girl student asks him where he is from and he makes another mistake, "Afghan, Lebanon, Cambodia, Iraq..." When he says his hobby is fishing and readings books, someone asks what kind of books he reads. He replies without a moment of hesitation a list of military journals, including "Jane's All the World's Aircraft" ^_^;; Almost all the class is struck dumb by now, except one boy. Another military otaku, Kazama Shinji, is impressed with Sousuke, who realises he has made yet another mistake. But it isn't the last one. Another girl asks "What is your favourite music?" Sousuke is confident this time. The various goods Melissa gathered for him in the Toatha de Danaan come useful now. He replies proudly, "Kadoakawa Gorou and Suppin Girls." [Well, this is inevitable but the change from the original novel spoils the scene completely. Sousuke says, "Itsuki Hiroshi and SMAP" in the novel].

After the lessons, Kaname and Kyouko go to the club room of the Softball Club. Kaname keeps speaking bad of Sousuke but Kaname calmly points out to her that she is continuously talking about him as if she is interested. Just when Kaname denies it vigorously, perhaps too vigorously, Sousuke opens the door of the room even without a knock. Girls, some of them in their underware, scream madly ^_^;; Taking the scream as a warning of terrorist attack, Sousuke grabs Kaname's clothes and brings her down to the floor while he takes his gun out to protect her. Of course, there is no terrorist and his explanation, "I've come here to join the club", is not accepted by the members of "WOMEN's Softball Club."

Kurz is now back at the safe house and tells Melissa how difficult it was to maneuver an AS in the middle of the big city secretly. She rewards him with a can of beer and then listens to a phone call of Kaname with her sister in New York. Just when she begins to talk about "a transfer student," a noise interrupts her concentration. It is Sousuke back from school... with his bag between his teeth and his hands handcuffed to a chair. He has constrained to the chair by the girls but has somehow managed to come home as he is. His comment is "It was difficult to buy a ticket at Sengawa Station" ^_^;; In the mean time, Kaname tells her sister, "Although he is very strange, he's kind of interesting." Melissa and Kurz understands what she means the boy doesn't get the message, "Hmmm... perhaps Chidori Kaname doesn't hate me..."
