Locating Comet Hale-Bopp

March 8, 5:00 am: Find a dark location with views to the northeast before dawn. Look about 20 degrees above the horizon.

March 8, 6:00 pm: Look toward the northwest at dusk, about 20 degrees above the horizon.

In early March, the comet is in the east-northeast just before dawn. At this time it is also becoming visible in the evening twilight, low in the northwest. Around March 20th, the best viewing shifts from morning to evening. The ever-brightening comet will be climbing higher in the northwest after dusk. Unfortunately, the Moon also grows brighter in the evening during the middle of March, which will hinder viewing.
