Hampton Lillibridge Crandall was born about 1778 in either Rhode Island or Connecticut. Hampton is listed in the John Courtland Crandall (JCC) book on Elder John Crandall; however, the linkage before Hampton was not given. Some including JCC, believe the parents were F. George and Tacy Tanner, while a more recent belief is Amy Lillibridge was Hampton's mother. Hampton was a manufacturer of perlash. He married Freelove Butler about 1805 probably in New York, perhaps, Genessee County. They had 8 children, Lewis, Caroline, John Smith, Charles, Horace Stanley, Susan, Eliza, and Esther Louise. All of these were born in Genesee County except Esther Louise who was born in 1830 in Seneca County, Ohio. Sometime around 1848 Hampton and family moved to Wapello County, Iowa. He died there 1 January 1863 is buried in Mars Hill Cemetery in Keokuk Township along with his wife who preceded him in death.
John Smith Crandall married Elizabeth Bibler born 1812 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Her parents were Jacob Bibler, Jr. born 1790 in Rockingham County, VA and Susannah Haus b. in 1792. They had 5 children: Susannah, Hampton Lillibridge, Charles Gerry, Ester Caroline and James Monroe. The first three were born in McCuthesonville, Seneca Co., Ohio. Ester Caroline was born near or in Bentonsport, Iowa and James Monroe in either Iowa or Missouri. He married Sarah A. GENTRY on 13 March 1846. About 1847, John marrried Malinda BROYLES and they had one son, John Franklin born 2 June 1848. John Smith died 7 Aug 1851 in Trenton, Grundy County, MO. His obit is here.
Of John Smith's children, Susannah married Samuel A. Brown, born 1830 in TN; they settled in Sullivan County, MO and had nine children all born in that county. Hampton Lillibridge married Mariah Thompson born 12 August 1843 in Illinois. More about them later.
Charles Gerry married Christina Johnson born in Sweden in 1841.
By 1863, this family moved to Tehema County, California. All five of their children were born there. Ester Caroline married John William Hansard born in Knoxville, TN, son of Calvin B. and Hannah, both of whom were born in TN in 1816. (Picture courtesy of Rollin GOLDEN of Sacremento, CA)
Little is presently known of James Monroe other than he was born about 1844 in Iowa or Missouri.
Hampton Lillibridge Crandall was born on Christmas Day 1836 (may have been 1835 per 1850 Ohio census or as late as 1837 per 1880 MO Soundex). Most likely born in Seneca County, Ohio. He and Mariah Thompson were married on 1 January 1863 in Floris, Davis County, Iowa. Not long after, Hampton joined the 7th Iowa Cavalry. They had two children both born in Omaha Nebraska: Mary Bell born 2 March 1865 and Charles born 1 Mar 1867. Hampton and Mariah moved to southern Missouri settling in Fairview, Newton County where both are buried in Dice Cem. Charles was married twice. His marriage to Julia Cowan took place at his father-in-law's house in Pioneer, Missouri on 16 June 1901 and is recorded in the Barry County courthouse records.
Julia's dad was Louis Franklin Cowan born 26 Sept. 1855 in Arkansas and her mom was Mary Jane Williams born in Arkansas in 1854. From this union two children were born, Minnie and Earl William. Earl William married Ida Elsie Crain born 20 June 1920 in Saginaw, Newton County, MO. Her parents were Enoch Van Buren Crain born 13 December 1878 in Mountain Grove, Wright County, MO (child of George W. and Caroline Smallwood) and Sadie Valentine Clary born to George W. Clary and Syrena Livingston.
