Good race on the high speed
Monza circuit, with the placings changing regularly as cars overtook under brakes coming
into the chicanes.
Race leader Mika Hakkinen made a driver error and came off on lap 30.
His retirement means that he now shares the top spot on the race leader board with
Ferrari pilot Eddie Irvine.
Heinz-Harold Frentzen scored his first F1 win for a delighted Jordan team.

Start | McLaren's David Coulthard did not make a good
start from his 3rd stop on the grid, being beaten to the first corner by Zanardi, then
Ralf Schumacher and Salo also overtaking him by the end of the first lap. Gene and De La Rosa collide with Gene retiring. Fisichella loses his Benetton into the gravel and also retires. |
