- Race Report

Warm Up Lap Absolute chaos at the start. Diniz didn't get away and Wurz stalled when he got to the grid (thus ruled to start at the rear of the grid. Start aborted.
Start The field gets through the first few corners when the red flags come out - aborting the race, due to computer failure on the circuit, meaning no times could be given.
Verstappen is tapped by Button on the hairpin - and Vertsappen has to retire, blocking the road.
Restart De La Rosa retires.
The mechanics haul their gear back to the cars for the third start, and with clutches and engines at their limits, fans are brought in to blow cold air into the cars.
Both Button and Wurz start from the pits.
Restart The field gets away, with an incident free first corner.  R.Schumacher has a great start, gaining two places. Alesi passes Barrichello.

Lap 23 Mazzacane hits the barrier and retires his Minardi.
Lap 24 While M.Schumacher streaks away to a lead of over 23 seconds, there is only 4.8 seconds seperating 2nd placed Trulli from 6th placed Hakkinen. 
Lap 28 Herbert pits - long and unscheduled, but rejoins a lap down behind 8th placed Barrichello, then allows Barrichello, Fisichella and Irvine through.

Lap 46 Zonta and Heidfeld pit together from 9th and 10th position (8.2 seconds) - Zonta gets out just ahead. Hakkinen goes up to 9th position.   M.Schumacher is 33.506 seconds ahead of 2nd placed Coulthard.
Lap 46 R.Schumacher is stretchered off with a deep cut to his left leg.  Brother Michael said after the race that is isn't bad, but will require a lot of stitches.
Lap 49 Race leader Michael Schumacher pits 7.7 seconds and rejoins in first place.
Lap 50 1/ M.Schumacher (11.137 seconds) 2/ Coulthard
Lap 50 Zonta hits the barrier and retires.
Lap 51 Gap between M.Schumacher and Coulthard is down to 7.607 seconds.
Irvine pits and rejoins behind Salo in 7th place.
Lap 52 Fisichella pits for 7.6 seconds.
All cars up to 7th position are lapped by Schumacher.
Lap 53 Into the pits together come Frentzen's Jordan and Barrichello's Ferrari for a 7.2 second stop - Frentzen comes out just ahead.

Lap 56 Race leader Michael Schumacher race is over when his right read suspension fails.  He limps back to the pits and retires from 1st place.  Ferarri had 33 races without a mechanical problem - an impressive record!
