The 19 year old Spaniard, Fernando Alonso, debuts in Formula 1 in 2001 after only his second season of single-seater racing. The year before he was racing in Karts!
Alonso impressed the Formula 1 fraternity in
2000 with his fourth place finish in
International Formula 3000 last year, particularly with his win in Spa,
Belgium.
Alonso is contracted to the Benetton team, but has been loaned to Minardi for
2001 in order to gain racing experience.
He joins newcomer at Minardi Paul Stoddart who took over the Minardi Team in 2001.
