The chart which follows details various lines of American descent branching from the emigrant generation--two brothers, SEBASTIAN LIEDEL and PHILIPP JACOB LIEDEL--and a third Liedel (a cousin), ANTON, whose descendants also made their way to Monroe. I have used the following scheme to indicate descent from the common ancestor.
MICHAEL LIEDEL A) son A] grandson a) great-grandson a] great great-grandson A} great great great-grandson a} great great great great-grandsonPlease observe the different combinations of letters and shape of the immediately following brackets before the names. This information was copied from my Liedel master file and my direct ancestors are shown in CAPITAL LETTERS. Since there was too much information to fit one page, at least one that would make sense, where it seemed appropriate I have linked the names of founders of U.S. lines to descent pages of tbeir own. Major contributions to this effort were made by Don Leidel and Greg Liedel, both of Monroe, MI.
The first two decades of the 18th century were hard ones for the Palatine, the broad plain and foothills bordering the Rhine river. It was, coincidentally, the same area which provided a great many of the first German emigrants to the English northern colonies, particularly the Hudson River valley of New York. The reason for the emigration of those early German Americans was in all likelihood the same one that brought Michael Liedel to Oestringen: the terrible winter of 1709, in which a good part of the Rhine valley froze, followed by a series of what were probably plagues through 1713. 1712 was the worst year, with 49 deaths (21, or nearly 50% in August) and the vacancies in Oestringen's skilled labor force provided the opening for an ambitious man to take his place in a new community. This is when Michael Liedel makes his first appearance.
The 1714 marriage record of Michale Liedel named MARTIN LIEDEL as his father, place of residence "Hochstadensis." There is a nearby place in Baden named Hochstetten (double "tt", near Graben), but Latin grammar adds possesives, so that both "-en" and "-sis" may be disregarded, yielding a birthplace of "Hochstadt." Unfortunately, there are a number of places in Germany with this name: the closest is southwest of Speyer (near Landau), but I have been unable to learn if a Martin Liedel lived there. Until better evidence is obtained, "Hochstadt" (wherever it was) will serve as the ultimate hone of our Liedel ancestors.
Michael Liedel, whenever he came, married a local girl and settled in for the rest of his life, although late in that life he considered emigrating to Hungary. His descendants would become numerous and endure in Oestringen until the Second World War.
For the German generations, only the line of direct descent is shown below. If you wish to know more, write me and I will send you something.
