Background:
Richard started studying music at an early age. (His father was classical guitarist John Marlow--member of the Washington Guitar Quintet) During his last two years at James Madison University (JMU), he began studying flamenco guitar and was soon transcribing AND playing pieces by Paco de Lucía and Manolo Sanlucar. (Excerpts of his transcriptions of Paco and Manolo were published in the April 1998 issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine.)

While at JMU, Richard also frequently performed with percussionist Paul Erickson with whom he has made several recordings. His musical experience with Paul has contributed greatly to Richard's keen rhythmic sensitivity.

For his graduation recital he closed the program with pieces by Paco de Lucía and his own composition Para mi Padre (a bulerías duet in Rondeña tuning for flamenco and classical guitar with percussion) dedicated to his father classical guitarist John Marlow.

DC-area flamenco guitarist Tom Cotton and Richard met for the first time at a Paco de Lucía concert in DC in 1996 through a mutual friend. Tom, an accomplished flamenco guitarist himself, showed Richard some of the subtleties of guitar technique he picked up from Paco de Lucía. (Tom had the privilege of being invited to join Paco onstage in a duet in the 70's)

Later guitarist Michael Pérez (author of this website) met Richard in March 1997: "The first thing he did was hand me his transcription of Paco de Lucía's alegrías La Barrosa and he proceeded to play it almost like the recording! I was blown away! I couldn't believe that anyone could make that much technical progress in two years."

Richard started at first playing for Ena Camargo's classes. Word started getting around about Richard's musical talents and soon he was playing for many different dancers. Today he is the most active performer in the DC area.

Backstage at Lanier Auditorium in Fairfax, Virginia for the show with Danza del Río May 2, 1998: Richard with dancer Michelle Goldin.

Richard has transcribed and learned many modern flamenco pieces such as Vicente Amigo's bulerías Mandaito and Gerardo Núñez's bulerías Jucal, both of which require a high degree of musical and technical ability.

He gives private guitar lessons in Fairfax, Virginia.

Richard and dancer Sara Jerez recently returned from Spain where they took workshops (in July 1999) with guitarist Gerardo Núñez and Carmen Cortés respectively.
