Understanding the role of the fool must involve understanding the social functions he fills and the relationships he forms with other traditional figures. The most fundamental relationhips being bot those a part of a heroic triad involving the Fool/the Hero/ and the King; and the relationship of the fool to the Princess (herself representative of yet another triad.) We also finded the fool deeply linked with death and can perhaps build another triad from the Monk the bishop and the poet nor can we leave out the academic or scholar, long time rival and compatriot of foolery.
