Juliette Binoche Biography
Last updated 18 april 1996.

She was born in Paris March 9 1965. When she was a child she was nicknamed Brioche for her fragrance. Her mother was an actress, her father a sculptor, so her destiny seemed to be set early. But the beginning was hard and her first job was the one of a cashier in a supermarket.

Her acting career starts at age 17 when she plays Ionesco. At the beginning of the eighties JB has a terrible casting for A Nos Amours: While auditioning for it, she says she loves the Beineix' movie Diva and the director ( maurice pialat ) did not, so he threw her out. But acclaim and fame on a higher level comes with Rendez-Vous ( by Andre Techine ) and with Hail Mary by Jean Luc Godard. JB doesn't cherish any good memories of Godard - she says he had a strange psyche and accused her of being a hypocrite.

Then she meets Léos Carax and this should be the beginning of a serious realtionship which last about seven years. She plays in Carax' Bad Blood the first movie about AIDS ( actually the movie talks about an epidemy having the same characteristics ). In 1988 Juliette reaches for international fame with The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Then JB starts working with Carax at his third ( and still his latest ) movie: Les Amants du Pont-Neuf. This masterpiece takes all of her and her partner's effort and energy until its completion in 1991 ( see the Making of Les Amants du Pont-Neuf page ).

JB's definitive breakthrough is marked by Louis Malle's Damage, based on the novel by Josephine Hart. World watches Juliette naked in Jeremy Irons' arms, in the movie her boyfriend's father ; On the set, Irons was hell for Juliette. The hate between Binoche and Irons poses many problems to her making the love scenes.

After the success of Damage, Juliette receives offers for Blue and for Jurassic Park. The answer she gave Spielberg: "OK, but only if I'll play the dinosaur." So she chooses Kieslowski, and this man astonishes her, he turns out to be a "gentle alien", and thinking back, Juliette remembers that working with him has been an true pleasure. JB has cameo appearences also in the other two movies of the Kieslowski trilogy: at the beginning of White and at the end of Red.

After Blue Juliette takes two years off the world of filmmaking because of her pregnancy. Infact in 1994 she has her first child, a boy which she named Raphael. In 1995 JB starts making Hussard sur le Toit ( a movie by Jean Paul Rappenau inspired by the novel by Jean Giono ) playing the part of the artistocratic Pauline de Theus. During the takes of this movie she meets Olivier Martinez her leading man in Le Hussard and falls in love with him. Now Olivier, Juliette and Raphael live in a big house just outside Paris. Rumors say the house is in the middle of nature with a fireplace and a secret garden and that they watch old movies ( love stories ) as Juliette had always dreamed of.

For three years Juliette will be doing ads for Lancôme wearing Poême, the parfume created by Jacques Cavallier. For this campaign she was photographed by Richard Avedon and did a clip in Louisiana.

Juliette likes to read Carlos Castaneda and Gitta Mallasz ( Dialogue avec l'ange ), participates in Alfred Tomatis' seminaries about voice, vibrations and spirituality. She's ravenous when it comes to Nutella ( a German nut & chocolate bread spread ). In the world of cinema she likes Nanni Moretti, Anna Magnani and Audrey Hepburn. Her idols are Arletty and Simone Signoret.
