This tutorial is similar to my Paint Blob Edges technique. This is another simple technique which you can use and create realistic 3D text. Similar to the Cut-out Text effect, this technique looks great using text the same colour or texture as the background, giving a beveled look. You will need to use:
- the text tool,
- the cut-out function and
- the drop shadow function.
Step 1:
Create a new image with your background colour or wallpaper. Add some text using a thick or bold font. If you want the font to be the same texture or colour as your background, uncheck the "floating" box. Keep the text selected throughout the whole tutorial.
Step 2:
Click "image - effects - cut-out" and enter these options:
- Shadow Colour: Black
- Opacity: 60
- Blur: 5
- Vertical Offset: -3
- Horizontal Offset: -3
This is what you should see.
Step 3:
You can add more to the beveled effect by adding another cut-out with these options:
- Shadow Colour: White
- Opacity: 80
- Blur: 5
- Vertical Offset: 3
- Horizontal Offset: 3
This completes the 3D look of our text.
Step 4:
If you wish, you can add a drop shadow which can emphasise the 3D look just a bit more. Click "image - effects - drop shadow" and enter these options:
- Colour: Black
- Opacity: 60
- Blur: 10
- Vertical Offset: 3
- Horizontal Offset: 3
Doesn't that look stylish? Try this: white text on a white background ... there's a great look waiting for you! But you might want to contract the selection by 1 pixel before adding the drop shadow ("selections - modify - contract").
