Inside the Walls of Anagoor

It was the eve of my departure when it happened. I had everything packed and ready to go, so I could leave at three o'clock on the dot.

I was lying on my bedroll by the fire. It was then, in my dreams, that a voice, strange yet beautiful like the sound of a tinkling bell, came to me. It told me that I was the chosen one to enter through the walls. It said that when the first rays of dawn showed pink in the sky, a gate would be opened for me, and only me.

In my dreams, I saw a small gate set into the wall on the east side of the city. I saw a single person standing outside it. It took me a minute but I realized that, that person standing there was me. Then the gate opened, but before I could get a peek of what was beyond; the image disappeared.

It was ten minutes to three o'clock when I woke up. I kept thinking; do I leave now and go home, or do I try to find the gate? For ten full minutes, I argued with myself on what to do.

In the end, curosity got the better of me. I picked up my stuff and headed east. After I rounded the corner of the east wall, the gate was smack dab in front of me.

What surprised me the most was that this was the only gate on the east side of the wall. I realized that I was the only person, out of the pilgrims, to know that this gate existed because at first glance it looked like an ordinary part of the wall. A person would have to take a second and closer look to tell that it was truly a gate.

Suddenly the sky got cloudly and dark as if a thunderous storm was comming. Out of the clouds a single golden ray of sunlight filtered down from the heavens, and landed on the gate, or what used to be the gate.

It was as if the gate had disappeared, I really could not tell what was beyond it, because the light had temporarily blinded me. It was then that I heard the soft voice, whispering on the wind, calling, beckoning me to come on through the gate.

I couldn't say that I actually walked through the gate, because it felt as if I was floating on air. I knew that I was on the other side of the wall when I heard the gate slide softly back into place. But from where I could not tell you.

I blinked once, twice, and even a third time just to make sure that I was not dreaming, because I found myself surrounded, on all sides, by a lush, green, mystical forest; but I could not hear any birds singing or the hum of bugs. The only thing I could hear was the ripple of the wind as it made the leaves rustle.

At first I felt that I was alone and lost, but the forest's magical feeling made me gradually feel at home. I had this overpowering sense that I had lived here all my life.

I dropped all my stuff not caring if I broke anything. I started to walk through the light dappled forest, in what direction, I did not know. I first thought that I would get lost in this big green maze, but I did not.

Just when I thought that the forest would never end, I cane to a big clearing where there was this huge lake. The crystal clear water was shining, sparkling, and shimmering in the sunlight.

I ran to the edge of it and knelt down. As I was admiring my image, I felt this little push, like some unseen force, and into the lake I fell. When I came out, I did not feel the same.

I felt this sharp burning sensation radiating from the inside out. It did not take me long to realize that I was undergoing a metamorphic change.

I could feel my bones rearranging themselves. My arms and legs grew longer and stronger, my back got broader and stronger, and my face grew longer. My hair, turned white, started to grown on my body to where it covered me from head to tail. My hands and feet became round, hard, golden shell-like hooves.

I felt so alive that I ran around the lake at least six times before I stopped to rest. I could not believe that I could run as fast as a cougar. When I ran, I felt as light as a feather, as if my hooves did not strike the ground at all, not even a puff of dust was made.

I went to the water's edge to get a drink, and that is when I noticed that I had become a unicorn. But how could that be! Because unicorns did not exist, or did they? I really did not know.

I noticed that my coat was snow white, I had a golden horn that seemed to glow with magic untold, and crystal blue eyes that look as deep as a person's soul.

I turned sharply when I heard a noise behind me, because my sense of hearing had become as acute as a fox's hearing. It did not surprise me that there stood another unicorn, because I had been able to sense that there was more like me not too far away from where I stood.

"How does it feel to come home?" the other one asked me.

"what do you mean? this cannot be my home. I am not really a unicorn, am I? what has brought on this change, and why me?" I asked curiosly.

"Oh, but it is your home. Here let me explain. Thousands of years ago the unicorn family was plentiful, but that was before the mortals came. After the first mortal was made, our population started to drop, at sickening rates. They would kill off thinking that they could learn our secret for magic. What they didn't know was that we had to be alive to get our magic, because when we die our magic dies." the other one said.

"If we are immortal, then how can we die?" I asked.

"Once our horn is broken or cutt off we lose our power and will to live. Well, the ones that were left, built these walls around the forest to protect us. As soon as we get all of our brothers and sisters back we will try to take back what was rightfully ours. By the way, my name is Demi." the other one replied, "What is yours?"

"I really don't know anymore." I said.

"Well, I'll give you the name Ice, because it suits you, don't you think?" Demi asked.

"Yes it does, I guess. I have some more questions for you, like why was I in mortal form until now? How many more are there of us? Also how many are there yet to be found?" I asked.

"You were in mortal form because that was the only way for us to hide, from the mortals. There is so far twenty of us all together, and we really don't know how many of us there are left to come home." Demi said, "Come and I will introduce you to the others."

We traveled through the forest untill we came to an even bigger clearing. Bigger then the one we had just left; which I did not think could be possible. There in the middle were the other unicorns that Demi had told me about.

The big males with their flowing beards, the mares with their feathered hooves, and the young ones with a little stub of horn romping in the fields. All looked wonderful to my eyes.

Demi announced our arrival with a high pitched squeal. The others all stopped what they were doing and came to meet us halfway. As the others all crowded around, I felt as if I had come home. I mean truly home, where I would be loved and treated as an equal. I think that I will love it here with this big happy family.
