John Perkins Stroud first enlisted in Star Company 5th Arkansas Infantry (State Troops) as 2nd Lieutenant under Capt.J.G. McKean. The 5th Arkansas was Organized in April 1861, Mustered out in September 1861. First Commander, Colonel Thomas P. Dockery; Field Officer Lt. Colonel Joseph Neal. The 5th was assigned to Pearce’s Arkansas State Troops Brigade from June to September. Their only Battle was The Battle of Wilson’s Creek August 10,1861. When the term for enlistment was over the Regiment was disbanded.
John Stroud then enlisted in Colonel Dawson’s Arkansas 19th Infantry Regiment, Company F. John enlisted as a Private, and was later promoted to Wagon Master. The 19th took part in the Battles’ of Elkhorn Tavern, March 7th 1862 and Arkansas Post, January 11th 1863. At Arkansas Post half of the 19th was captured. John Stroud was not captured. The remaining 19th was consolidated with portions of the 24th Arkansas and formed Dawson Hardy’s Regiment. It is unclear as to where John Stroud was reassigned. Capt. McKean Returned home and raised Company H, of the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry. The 3rd operated in Arkansas and Missouri until the end of the War. It is suspected that John Stroud followed Capt. Mckean. Pension records show John served to the end of the War.
JOHN PERKINS STROUD was born in Clark County Arkansas 8 August, 1819. John married Matilda Dollarhide on March 9, 1843 in Sevier County , by whom he had three children, Nancy, Rebecca, and WILLIAM SCOTT. After Matilda’s death John Stroud married her cousin Miss Penelope Montgomery White on 4 June 1854 in Sevier County. Nine children were born from this union: John S.; Narcissa Lucy; Melinda; Mary Belle; Benjamin F;Coleman; Martha; and Kate. After the War the John P. Stroud family moved to Sebastian County where he died 12 February 1875 and was buried on his farm, now the Stroud Cemetery, near Witcherville.
