California Mascots

USS California, undergoing final touches before commissioing Feb. 16. in Norfolk, will have two California animal mascots. The tiny bear cub (below) just born at Folsom Zoo will be named "Ensign" in honor of the nuclear frigate. He'll stay in the California city's zoo, but a redwood bear carving will be bolted to the vessel's deck as a constant reminder of the mascot to the ship's crew. The cub was six inches long and weighed 14 ounces when it was born last Saturday. The redwook statue recalls "Prunes," a bear mascot of the first USS California, a battleship. That bear, captured in Yosemite National Park, lived on ship for a year and then was given to the Los Angeles Zoo.
