 ~ Black Confederates ~
In late 1863, General Pat Cleburne and some of his officers drafted a proposal to President Jefferson Davis soliciting the enlistment of southern slaves in return for their freedom. This proposal was submitted January 2, 1864, but was rejected.

In February 1865, John Hunt Morgan's troops passed a Resolution favoring official Confederate black enlistment. After additional letters from War Secretary Benjamin and General Lee, the Negro Soldier Law was signed on March 13, 1865.

It should be noted that there is enough evidence indicating that Black Confederates fought among the ranks for the South long before this law was adopted.
