5/24/98 - According to the International Home Furnishings Market, Americans are spending more $$$ on furnishings than they are on clothes. What a surprise! Boomers & Generation X - must be that cocooning thing! They also say that Arts & Crafts & Mission-style furishings are big with the boomers, even calling it "boomer casual". Do you have the pale wood, brushed nickel, frosted glass look in your home??? New coming "classic contemporary" and "traditional modern". Leather still is in high profile - only in a pearl or metalic look (I love the metalics - especially Ralph Lauren's Gold leather - it is so posh!) The Titanic and America's fasciantion with it (I haven't even seen the movie!) has inspired the "water look". Ash & brushed nickel are making the scene as "the" wood & metal of the early 90s. If you're like me you have a chaise & want another one. It's a trend now. My next one is going into my Master Suite (check out my Hope Chest). On that chaise or leather couch - toss lots of throw pillows (I personally think they are a pain in the butt!) Big beds are still popular - is the family bed coming back???? Cover your bed with chenille and more pillows. So how do you measure up? I have pale wood in the guest room - but no nickel. No chenille, lots of black leather, and a big DREAM of pink kitchen cabinets (see my Kitchen Re-Do pages). Are you fashionable? What is fashion? Do you do what "they" say is right or your own thing? Let me know - answer my questions below!
A year ago plus I came to the
conclusion that the day of Kitchen Islands was over and we would see their fading out in
the next year to come. Below is a picture of a model home here in Tampa that was in
the March 1, 1998 Tampa Tribune.
One
trend I see in Central & South Florida which doesn't seem likely to fade as our
economy grows richer is the trend towards neo-Mediterian style architecture. It
looks good here in our climate - but personally I am tired of seeing so many homes that
look the same. But they are very popular and I think they may last the decade, at
least the next 5 years. Another trend for the decade is Blue, in every shade.
It will replace the Hunter Green of the last decade and you will see it everywhere.
We even did our floors in blue ceramic tile. I am so sure it will be popular
(forever) and won't hurt when I go to sell my home in 8-10 years. Blue goes with
almost everything (tell me something it can't be used with. It is just like green -
the sky & the grass go with it all!)
As the world becomes less and less
safe we will also be in cocooning more and more, spending more time making our homes
wonderful expressions of peace and serenity. Also places to Hide from the outside
world.
Another big trend of the 21st Century will be Metal tones, golds, bronzes, silvers, you name it. This is my favorite door, I just love it and wish I could afford it! I think that we will move towards garden rooms and moving the garden inside more than we have already. Little courtyard type areas.
Another big trend I feel that the United States as a whole is moving toward is back to the old neighborhoods of our youth. Check out my page about neighborhoods.
