  Frades Escallonia

  Family: Saxifragaceae

  Origin: Native to South America

Hardiness: Freezes at 15 degrees, but easily recovers; Zones 8b-9-10
Growth: Medium growth rate to 6 feet high
Form: Mound, reaching 6 feet wide
Leaves: Dark green, glossy, up to one inch long
Flowers: Clusters of fragrant pink flowers spring through fall
Fruit or Seeds: Deadhead seed heads when they turn brown
Exposure: Full sun on coast; part shade inland
Water: Best with regular watering; established plants take drought
Soil: Well drained
Fertilizer: Spring or fall or not at all
Prune: Cut back stems after flowering to keep plant compact
Problems: Few problems

Don't expect flowers if you shear escallonias into smooth mounds or hedges. If you must shear, once a year is enough to keep the shrub compact.
