  Belgian Indica Azalea

  Family: Ericaceae

  Origin: Hybrids from Japan


Hardiness: Most are hardy to 20 degrees
Growth: Medium rate of growth to 2-4 feet
Form: Mound
Leaves: Oval, inch long, light to dark green
Flowers: White, red, orchid, salmon; single or double; 2.5" long
Fruit or Seeds:
Exposure: Shade or part shade
Water: Keep soil moist; water weekly in mild areas
Soil: Well drained; organic; acidic; 100% peat moss
Fertilizer: Acid food and iron May Day, 4th of July and Labor Day
Prune: Shear after bloom; do not prune after August
Problems: Root rots, including oak root fungus

Southern Indica Azaleas are also in this group, but will grow in full sun. These are the sun azaleas, which can grow to about 5 feet. Deciduous hybrids are best in colder areas.
