HUA HIN & CHA-AM TRIATHLON

At Cha-am Beach, Petchaburi
The triathlon (a 1.5 kilometre swim, a 40 kilometre bike race and a 10 kilometre run) is one of the events that attracts world-class triathletes from many countries. It receives international and domestic television coverages, and qualifies winners for the prestigious Hawaii Ironman Triathlon.

RAYONG, CHANTHABURI, TRAT FRUITS FAIRS' 98

These annual fairs are held in the eastern provinces of Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat to celebrate the abundance of local fruits such as rambutan, durian, mangosteen and zalacca, then at their peak of succulent ripeness. Besides stalls selling the produce of surrounding orchards, and local products, there are colourful processions of floats decorated with fruits and flowers, beauty pageants, fruits contests, cultural shows, exhibitions of provincial handicrafts and agricultural produce, and local entertainment.

ROYAL PLOUGHING CEREMONY

At Sanam Luang, Bangkok
An ancient Brahman ritual, this celebrates the official commencement of the rice-planting season and is held at Sanam Luang, the large field across from the Grand Palace. Colourful costumes are worn by the participants who perform various ceremonies which are believed to forecast the abundance of the next rice crop.

YASOTHON BUN BANGFAI ROCKET FESTIVAL
May 9 - 10, 1998
At Phaya Thaen Park, Yasothon
For this annual festival, village of the Northeast fashion rockets of all kinds, some of them several meters long, the launching of which is believed to ensure plentiful rains during the forthcoming rice - planing season. High-spirited revelry accompanies the event, with beauty parades, folk dancing, and stage shows.

VISAKHA PUJA

This is the holiest of all Buddhist religious days during the year, marking the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Lord Buddha. As on Magha Puja, temples throughout the country are crowded with people who listen to sermons by revered monks, and in the evening there is a solemn candlelit procession around main monastery chapels.

LYCHEE FAIR

At Sirikon Market, Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai, Thailand's northern most province, is known for the high qualify of the lychees that grow in its orchards, and this fair celebrates the harvest season. In addition to sales of the fruit, there are displays of other agricultural products and local handicrafts and a beauty contest to select Miss Lychee.
