Profile

Polar bear cub w/Michelle

I was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in southern England in 1966. I grew up in Hitchin (about 50 km north of London) and attended the Hitchin Girls' School before going to Oxford University (1985-1988) where I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Pure and Applied Biology from New College. In 1990, I moved from England to Alaska to follow my passion for wilderness and whales. I worked as an environmental scientist for BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc., based in Anchorage, for six years.

In 1996, I journeyed a little farther south, and spent two years in North Vancouver, British Columbia, followed by four years in beautiful Canmore nestled in the Rocky Mountains. Today, I live in Cochrane, in the foothills of the Rockies just 22km west of the City of Calgary.

I am the author of Reflections of a Whale-Watcher (Indiana University Press, 1995), Crossing Alaska (Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company, 1997), Water: Worlds Between Heaven and Earth (with world-renowned wildlife photographer Art Wolfe, Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 1999), The Nature of Great Apes (Greystone, 2000), Primal Forces (Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company, 2000), and The Living Wild (Wildlands Press, 2000) and Africa (Wildlands Press, 2001), both with Art Wolfe. My first children's book, Why Am I Rare? was published Fall 2002 by Red Deer Press.

I split my time between writing, traveling, and consulting through LGL Limited, an environmental consulting firm with offices in such places as Sidney, B.C., King City, Ontario, and Anchorage, Alaska. I am a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, the Canadian Authors Association, and the North American Nature Photography Association.
