Map of H. whitei distributionH. whitei commonly grows to around 20 centimeters in length. White's seahorse can only be found in in the tropical and temperate coastel waters on the southeast and southwestern Australian coasts. Sydney Harbor is one of the common residing places of H. whitei. Whie's seahorse is typically found in the shallow waters inhabited by seagrass and algae. An easy way to tell H. whitei from other species of seahorses is to look at the number of body and tail rings. White's seahorse has 11 trunk rings and from 33 to 36 tail rings.

White's seahorses typically breed from October to April.

H. whitei spend most of their time camouflaged in brown, gray and black shades. During the greeting ritual, H. whitei turns brighter shades of yellow and cream.
