How to use graphics on your site
OK, I guess you want to know how to put all those fun-looking pictures on your site, huh?
Well, before I tell you, let me give you three important words of advice:
- Well placed graphics can really spice up your site and make it user-friendly.
- Over-use of graphics can make your site look crowded and take YEARS to download.
- NEVER steal graphics from other people's sites unless they give you permission (and always credit them with a link from your Homepage).
OK. Lecture out of the way...I'll get off my soapbox.
Graphics are pretty darn easy to get on your Homepage. The first step is to upload the graphic into the Geocities File Manager using the EZ File Upload facility.
To do this, the graphic must be on your hard disk somewhere.
Downloading Graphics
Let's assume you see a groovy graphic you like on a page offering free graphics for personal use (only take graphics from these pages!). To find some of these pages, try here.
To save the graphic onto your hard disk, press the right-button on your mouse over the graphic, and select the option "save picture as..." (or something that sounds like that).
Next, choose where you want the graphic to be stored and voila...you have a brand-new picture to use in your site.
Uploading Graphics
Use the Geocities EZ File Upload facility to load the graphic onto your server. To check if this has been done, the graphic name should be listed in the file manager along with your .html files.
If you click on the "view" button near the listing, you should be able to see the graphic.
Inserting the Graphic in your Homepage
Next you have to insert the graphic into your Homepage.
At the point you want to insert the graphic enter the following tag:
<IMG SRC="graphic.gif">
where graphic.gif is replaced by whatever the name of the graphic is.
Note: The graphic does not have to be a .gif, any format will do!
Alignment
You can align the graphic to the left or right of the screen by following this format:
<IMG SRC="graphic.gif" ALIGN="left/right">
where you select either left or right, depending on your preference.
Extra Graphics Tips
Faster graphics
Downloading graphics takes a long time, but there is a way to make things speed up.
Gif Wizard is a service that allows you to input your .gif graphics, then it gives back a simplified, faster-loading version of your graphic!
I recommend running all your graphics through this program before uploading them to your Homepage.
Note: Unfortunately, this only works for .gif files
Paint Shop Pro
When you're ready to start creating your own graphics, Paint Shop Pro may be helpful in editing and converting your graphics. You can download it from here.
