REGGIE WHITE

After his team suffered a humiliating defeat, Philadelphia Eagle's defensive lineman Reggie White walked into the locker room to face the media.
"What do you think of the loss?" asked one news reporter.
The towering 6'6" White answered, "Jesus is still Lord."
Microphones jerked away. Notebooks slapped shut and reporters headed down the hall….
"Isn't that just like the devil," White called after them. "You mention the name of Jesus Christ and he just runs away." Challenged, the reporters came back to finish the interview.

Reggie White's message is not what one would expect from an all-pro football player. "I love my wife," he says. "God has given me an outstanding women and blessed me with two wonderful children." He has not always felt this way, though. Not a gentle giant by nature, White has acquired a loving spirit through many tough lessons from God. At one point, he wanted to quit his marriage, but God helped him to see that he was the one who needed to change. He learned that he must be a leader at home before he could be a leader of men.

Recently, White told reporters that he would no longer grant interviews unless they included what he said about Jesus. They listen to him now. "It takes a real man to live for Jesus, not a wimp." White explains with conviction. "Jesus was the greatest man who ever lived. To serve him, you have to lay down your life for him."

Take a tip from a gentle man who knows.

The words of Jesus Christ - "Therefore, everyone who acknowledges Me before men and confesses Me [out of a state of oneness with Me], I will also acknowledge him before My Father Who is in heaven and confess [that I am abiding in] him." - Matthew 10.32

For Green Bay's Reggie White, there's not much difference between faith, football, and everything else. Whether he's chewing up offensive linemen on his way to a sure place in the Football Hall of Fame, speaking out against the racism and injustice of firebombings in black churches including his own, or planting ministries in the tough turf of inner cities, he invests the same intensity, the same commitment of will, energy and focus.

In the Trenches is Reggie's own fast-paced, inspiring account of his colorful, sometimes controversial career, both in the pros and in the pulpit. Packed with insights, observations, and war stories, it delves
into the heart of an amazing athlete who balances an array of extremes: he is both beloved and feared, tough and gentle, competitive and compassionate, fierce and generous.

-----REGGIE WHITE holds the NFL all-time record for sacks, has earned a berth on ten Pro Bowl teams, and was named to the NFL's All 75 Year team. He's also a sure bet for the Football Hall of Fame.

Outside of football, White is president of Big Doggie Records, and copastor of the Inner City Church of East Knoxville, Tennessee, which will be rebuilt with the help of donations, many from Packers fans
across the country and from fellow NFL players.

When Reggie White signed with Green Bay, he was the team's last, best hope. The Packers were in dire need of some serious intimidation on the defensive line and, some would argue, a little divine intervention.

It didn't hurt to have a six-foot, six inch, 300-pound ordained minister running defense. As White hit his opponents with his towering bulk, he hit them just as hard with the word of God. His strategy was stunningly effective.

It also did great things for morale. Wisconsin fans -- many of whom owned a piece of the struggling franchise -- had spent nearly three decades longing for the glory days of Vince Lombardi. In just two years, the Pack trampled the burden of the long, dry season. They were back.

White wasn't a bit surprised. He was used to miracles.

In the Trenches is his own story of eleven years in the NFL, the Packers' amazing turnaround, the close race for Super Bowl XXX, the injuries that nearly ended his career, and his ambitions for next year's Super Bowl.

He also talks about the people and events that made him who he is today. First of all there is his faith, which influences and directs every aspect of his life. Then he gives all the credit to the tough-talking coaches who pushed him hard to reach his potential, a family that insisted he give nothing less than his best, and his wife Sara, whose wisdom, he says, saved him from total financial ruin.

Always bold and outspoken, White tackles the more controversial issues that have dogged his career. He candidly discusses his turbulent years with the Philadelphia Eagles, his $17 million salary, his opinions about NFL leadership and free agency, and his two years in the renegade United States Football League ( and why he misses it).

And, he takes seriously the influence that comes with his celebrity, using it to promote ministries that combat poverty and foster self-reliance and to speak out against the current firebombings of black churches in the South, including his own. All this from a man with a great natural ability and an even greater will to temper it with hard work, prayer, and vision.

Better than a front-row seat on the 50-yard line, In the Trenches is your ticket to the sights, sounds, thoughts, and emotions that surround one of America's most popular sports and one of its most respected stars.
