Remember Derek Redmond in the '92 Barcelona games? He was a 400 meter semi-finalist running for Great Britain. It was a race he had longed to run since the '88 games when, with only one minute to go before the event, he disqualified himself due to an Achilles' tendon problem. Four years and several surgeries later, he was about to run again.
Bam! The runners bolted out of the blocks, but 100 meters into the sprint Redmond collapsed with a torn hamstring. Paramedics rushed to him, but he waved them off. Redmond got up and hopped, fell, hobbled and even crawled...wanting to finish. Out of the crowd rushed a large man wearing a "Just Do It" cap. He came alongside the limp runner and with arms of compassion and support they crossed the finish line together. That man was Redmond's dad.
Looked around lately? It may not be that obvious, but many of our co-workers, neighbors and family members limp through life feeling the agony of poor choices, relational heartache, and moral breakdown—often sensing there must be more to life.
But breaking through the crowd of spectators comes someone with compassion—a Christ follower who understands their brokenness, offers support and introduces them to Jesus Christ the One who gives meaning to life and will walk across the finish line with those who put their trust in Him. Now, let's just do it.
