Did a John b. 1757, father Isaac be the first John?
fountis@erols.com

Yes, I found Jesse Davis b. 2 Dec 1792 m. Nancy Mason

Jesse Davis is son of Isaac Jr. b. 1760 Pr. Wm. Co. m. ____

Isaac Jr. is son of Isaac b. 1723 m. Eliz. Kincheloe

Isaac is son of Wm. Davis who m. Ellen Bland

(So Robert Davis b. ___ is the son of Jesse Davis b. 2 Dec. 1792 m. Nancy
Mason.) So this Robert could not have been my John's father. He was
named for the Richard probably that I sent you. Anyway, you are kin to
Pres. Jefferson Davis. I have this family down so I can see it.
Not sure about our Robert or if there was a Robert (father). thanks,
fountis

April 2, 1784 they conveyed 110 acres to Cornelius Kincheloe (Deed Book U,
page 494).
Pages 158-9 "Soon after the close of the Revolution Jesse Davis and several
of his brothers and sisters, including his sister Jane and her husband Hugh
Davis moved to a place later called "Davis Settlement" on Simpson's Creek
near Chaplin Fork in Nelson County, Kentucky. They built a fort there which
was known as Fort Kincheloe but later as "Burnt Station" after it was
attached by the Indians. It is believed that their mother and step-father
Rhodam Blancett also went with them to Kentucly. In 1793 Blancett received
a land grant of 1057 acres in Bourbon County. There were Blancetts living
in Jefferson County in 1785 (6 Filson Club Quarterly). The Davises also
received large land grants in Kentucky (Index for Old Kentucky Surveys and
Grants, by Kentucky Historical Socity (1975), pages 13, 44 and 45)." "Jesse
Davis was a Captain in the Revolution and served under the immediate command
of General Washington, who in General Orders commended him for his bravery
(Virginia Gazett January 23, 1778). Benjamin and Moses Wickliffe served
under him and a Sarah Mayhugh (of Hoadley) went with their company for three
years (Burgess, page 1317). Jesse's wido Nancy Melton Davis was allowed a
pension (No. W 8652) and a Bounty Land Warrant No. 2325 for 300 acres.
Jesse also received land grants of 5100 acres in Jefferson County and grants
of 1700 acres in Nelson County, Kentucky (Virginia Land Grant Books A: 128,
4: 536, 537, 608; 7: 279 and 10: 489). Jesse was born in 1755 and died in
1818 (48 D.A.R. Lineages, page 1)."
Page 161 "In 1837 Hugh Davis, then apparently living in Nelson County,
Kentucky, signed an affidavit in support of a pension claim by Jesse's widow
Nancy. The pension records show that Jesse was born in Prince William and
was Hugh's first cousin and also his brother-in-law and that Jesse married
Nancy Melton of Prince William on February 8, 1780. She was doubtless
related to Moses Melton and his wife Mary and Richard Melton and his wife
Margaret, all of whom were in Prince William in 1789 (Prince William Deed
Book X, pages 63 and 309),
From "Argus of Western America" published weekly by Kendall and Russells
Frankfort, Kentucky. Nove 27, 1818. Died - In Nelson County on the 21st day
of October last after a lingering illness of twelve months, Capt. Jesse
Davis, aged sixty eight years. Capt. Davis was an officer of the Revolution
and served under Washington at the Battles of Princeton, Brandyvine and
Monouth. He was an early adventurer in the settlement of Kentucky, and has
lived to see the "wilderness Blossom as the rose." Thus one by one are the
heros'f of '76 dropping into the grave and soon shall we see nothing of them
but the history of their noble actions.
"Jesse left a will dated April 5, 1818 which was recorded in Nelson County
February 15, 1819 and probated at Richmond, Virginia November 16, 1830,
naming his wife Nancy, his sons Presley, Elijah, Wilson L., William M., and
Jesse, Jr. and his daughters Elizabeth, Harriet and Nancy. By a codicil
added 21 Oct 1818 Nancy was cut off 'for just cause.'" Hers to Elijah but
if she has children he is to divide her share among them.

With so many Jesse Davis, it gets darn confusing, not only for the Davis but
for others who intermarried. I can't remember how many Jesse's I have in
file.

The Jesse that married Milton was a whole different person/place and time
than the one that married Mason.

The most reliable info I have on my Jesse was his dad was Henry Davis Sr. b
in Lancaster PA who married a Mary Ann Gross, hence the Gross name entering
the picture. Henry moved to Kentucky at some point and died in Nelson, KY in
1809. Of course, Jesse Gross was born in 1792 in Nelson KY and moved to
Indiana during his lifetime. The background on Mason is complete. Nancy
lived to be 101 and her mom to 111.
Hope this helps, buddy.
Hi Steven, just a couple of things real quick.
What system are you running. Possibly I could send something to help with
Pict files.

My Grandmother was Ruby Jane Davis. Most of the information I have received
was initially from her daughter Doris Weems Phelps. However, I have found
other of Ruby's siblings children, who have sent me files regarding Jesse
Gross. Believe me, I want to know more about him as much as anyone.

I will trouble you with only a few more things which I post below. These are
only two of the many messages from which my files are based.

As Norma says in her email, we have had to research many Davis lines to
distill that which is relavent.

By way of passing, I'll also mention that my first Zip disk is almost full.
I can send you almost 100MB of info relavent to my tree.
Best Regards, Larry

Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812. He served from November, 1814 until
May, 1815. He fought in the Battle of New Orleans, Jesse was a cousin of

Notes for NANCY MASON:
Nancy Mason was born in Green Co.,Kentucky, January 6, 1798, the daughter of
John and Hannah (Hutcheson) Mason. Her mother lived to be 111 years old.
Nancy's grandfather, William Mason, rendered material aid in the war of
Independence.
The Pioneer History of Indiana states that Nancy used beds of native brush
when they first located in Indiana, then used skins of wild animals. Later
she raised geese and sold feathers to enable her to buy three 40 acre tracts
of land. After the death of Jesse, she continued to live on the farm. About
1890 she attended a G.A.R. reunion held at her brother William Mason's home.
Both had children who served for the union in the War of the Rebellion. She
died in Pike Co., IN, January 9, 1895. Nancy lived to be 97 years old and
was laid to rest next to her husband Jesse.

married CAMARALZAMUM AUGUSTUS CROW January 03, 1886, son of WILLIAM CROW and
MELISSA HARDIN.

Notes for CAMARALZAMUM AUGUSTUS CROW:
Cam claimed to be part Native American and spoke often of playing with
Indian children in Kansas. He always wanted to be a minister like his great
uncle Jesse G. Lane. Jesse performed the marriage of Cam and Mary. Cam died
of diabetes insipidus - a disorder of the pituatary gland characterized by
intense thirst and by the excretion of large amounts of urine. He was
buried in Little Flock Cemetery near Shelburn, Indiana.

 v. HILLARY VERNET CROW, b. February 23, 1895.

Generation No. 5

5. ELSIE MAE5 CROW (MARY ELIZABETH4 DAVIS, JOHN JASPER3, DAVID JACKSON2,
JESSE1) was born March 20, 1895 in Oakland City, IN, and died July 25, 1972
in Terre Haute, IN. She married GEORGE CHESTER BARROWS August 18, 1921 in
Paris, IL, son of EDWARD BARROWS and NAOMI COLE.

Notes for ELSIE MAE CROW:
Elsie was the youngest of five children. She was a 'blue baby" and the
doctor did not expect her to live through the night. She had vision
problems and did not complete school because of this.
Elsie was 4'10" while her husband was 6'1". She met him at a New Years Eve
Party. They went to Paris, IL, to be married accompanied only by her friend
Emily Sheety. (Paris was the popular place to be married in those days.)
Elsie wanted to be married by a minister, but all the ministers had gone to
a conference. They had to be married by a justice of the peace - which
Elsie always regreted.
The early years of their marriage was spent in Shelburn, IN. Then they
moved to West Terre Haute, IN, so that George could work in the mines there.
In 1939, they purchased a house in Terre Haute. The two-story house which
stood on four lots cost $2000. The payments were $20.00 a month. George
saved $20 bills and paid the house off quickly.
The most important things in Elsie's life were her family and her church.
She loved to talk on the phone and was a good listener. The only hobby she
had was crocheting. she helped her husband in the garden and canned a lot
of the garden's produce. She loved to shop and would ride the bus into town
and return with one or two loaded shopping bags. She had an intense fear of
storms and would pace the floor during one. She never completely got
overthe death of her son and often talked about Paulie. She also grieved
over the death of her buddy - her husband - for the remainder of her life.
She and George always called each other buddy.
She died at the age of 77 following surgery. She had cancer of the liver.

Notes for GEORGE CHESTER BARROWS:
George was the only son in a family of six children. His parents were often
separated and George had to support his mother and sisters. After his
marriage, he built his first home in Shelburne. Most of his working life
was spent as a miner. He had the unique ability to tell what another person
was thinking. He often would tell his fellow miners the time as they looked
at their watches. Although he only completed the fourth grade, he was a
prolific reader and could work advanced mith problems. He kept his own
teeth until he was past sixty years old and never wore glasses except for
cheap magnifying ones. He was hard of hearing and had a severe cough from
his years in the mine. He developed hardening of the arteries, and died
with pneumonia. He was 6'1" and weighed 135 pounds when in his sixties. He
had blond hair (later thin and gray) and gray eyes. He had broad shoulders,
a long torso, and short legs for his height. He was a quiet man who would
rather go for a walk than get involved in an arguement. He couldn't stand
crowds, but he loved his family. After working in a low-ceiling mine all
day, he loved to work outside in his garden. His property covered four city
lots. It contained a beautiful flower garden, a huge vegetable garden,
grape arbor, peach trees, cherry trees, and persimmon trees. There was also
a large chicken yard. George was baptized in his early thirties and remained
loyal to the church all of his life.

I will get back to you on Botetourt Co. info. Very interesting. I live in
Clay Co. IN. Also living here are the children of your grandmother's
sister, Annie. Harold and Lloyd Plunkett and Rosalee Mullinex. I run into
them often. My mother and Annie were especially close, and we use to visit
them when I was a child.
I have pictures you may be interested in - John Davis and family, John Davis
as an old man, and one of my mother, your grandmother, and great-aunts as
young girls.
I have also been in touch with Alan White who was a descendant of Jesse
Gross Davis.
Please let me know what additional information you have about Davis or
Mason. I do have more information on the Jesse Gross line.

Well you've hit the right person. I have quite a bit on your Davis's. I
started trying to search for the parents of Philip Davis of Pike Co IN. In
my search I finally decided I was going to have to search and piece together
every Davis family. I've been working on it for several years and have yet
to fit Philip Davis in with the other Davis's. But I've got bundles of
information on every one else's family.

How much do you want? I have the census records in Excel for every Davis in
Pike county from 1840-1870. I can email them to you if you want them.

If you have Microsoft Word I can send you all the transcribed documents
which include Jesse's will, his War of 1812 pension file and several land
transactions. I can also snail mail copies of the originals to you if you
like.

Have you corresponded with Alan White? He is also tracing your family line.
I sent him copies of everything I have. If you'd like his email address
just let me know.

. Jesse Gross Davis Sr. was born in Nelson Co., KY Oct 31, 1792. Jesse
died March 14, 1860 Pike County IN, at 67 years of age. His body was
interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis Cemetery.

He married Nancy Mason in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY, Dec 21, 1815.
Nancy was born in Kentucky Jan 6, 1795. Nancy was the daughter of John
Mason and Hannah Hutcheson. Nancy died Jan 9, 1896 Pike County IN, at 101
years of age. Her body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis
Cemetery. Consent for the marriage of Nancy and Jesse was granted by her
mother on December 19, 1815. Her mother's name was listed as Hannah Mayson.

Just after her daughter Tacy died, Nancy left land in a deed conveyance in
October 1874, to her grandchildren by Jesse Clifford.

Obit: Pike County Democrat, Friday, Jan 17, 1896 Nancy Davis, the oldest
person in this section of the country, died at the residence of James Black
last Sunday. She was one hundred and one years old and was drawing a pension
as surviving widow of the war of 1812. She was a sister to William and
David Mason, Sr., who died a short time ago. Jesse fought in the War of 1812
in John Farmer's Kentucky Militia. On September 28, 1850 the government
passed an act awarding 80 acres of land as bounty for any survivors of the
War of 1812. On March 3, 1855 they passed another act allowing those same
veterans an additional 80 acres of land. Jesse was awarded 80 acres of land
on bounty land warrant 6274 and another 80 acres of land on bounty land
warrant 46179. On March 9, 1878 the government passed an act allowing
widow's of veterans of the War of 1812 to file for a pension.

In his pension file, on April 24, 1855, Jesse stated that he was 63 years
old and a resident of Pike Co IN. That he had served for the term of six
months (Nov 27, 1814 to May 10, 1815) in the war of 1812 against Great
Britain, that he had received bounty land of 80 acres and had legally
disposed of it. He was applying for his second 80 acres.

In 1878, Nancy filed for a widow's pension. She states that her husband at
the time of his enlistment at age 23 was a farmer about six feet, black
hair, hazel eyes and had dark complexion. She states that he was born in
Nelson County KY and that they were married in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY
by Martin Utterback a Baptist minister. She states that her maiden name was
Mason. From the date of their marriage to October 1819 they resided in
Bardstown, KY (Nelson Co) when they moved to Gibson Co., IN where they
remained about 20 years and then moved to Pike Co., IN where they lived
until the death of her husband and where she still resided.

In the Tax lists for Hardin Co, KY Jesse is not listed in 1814. He is
listed in 1815 as owning one horse/mule worth $30. He is not listed in 1816
or any year after. According to Nancy's pension affadavit, they were in
Nelson Co, KY right after their marriage.

There is a Jesse Davis that purchased land Aug 28, 1818 in Gibson County IN.
He also purchased land on Sept 11, 1821, January 11,1834 and March 30, 1836
in Gibson Co IN. Buying land in the same parcel was Robert Clark Davis (Nov
14, 1818), Joel Davis (Sept 30, 1835) and William Ross Davis (Dec 12, 1834).
It's possible that Jesse was related to these Davis's. There is a Robert
Davis listed in the 1815 Hardin Co KY tax list.

Jesse is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Gibson County IN census. There is a
Robert C. Davis, William R Davis and David Davis listed also.

In the parcel next to one above, John Davis purchased land May 13, 1833 and
July 31, 1836.

While living in Gibson County Jesse purchased land in Pike Co. IN on March
29, 1837. He is listed in the 1840 census in Pike Co.

Jesse also purchased land in Pike County on Nov 25, 1848, July 14, 1849,
Sept 21, 1850, and June 5, 1851 (used his Military Land Warrant). In the
same section of land his sons John J. and David J. also purchased land.

Based on the number of children listed in the 1840 census we have added
those missing to our list.

In the 1850 census Jesse and family are in Pike Co IN in Monroe township.
Their grandchildren Lydia and Josiah Davis (children of David Jackson Davis
and wife Lydia ?) are living with them. We know these are not Jesse's
children because he states that his daughter Tasey Lewis Davis born in 1842
is his youngest daughter. After Jesse's son David's wife Lydia died he had
remarried so we assume that his mother took his two youngest children to
raise. In 1860 Nancy is living alone with her children still in Monroe
township after Jesse's death. In 1870, Nancy is living with her daughter
Tacy Clifford and her family still in Monroe township.

Jesse left a will dated Dec 21, 1855 in Pike County, IN. He only bequeathed
land and/or goods to his wife, his 4 youngest children and one
granddaughter. He named his son David Jackson Davis as executor. His older
children may not have needed support or he may have already settled land or
money on them at an earlier date. In 1860 the disposition of items was
made based on Jesse's will. He left beds to two of his daughters, his wife
and his granddaughter. The value of his estate was approximately $3500.00.

In Sept 1881, an heirship deed conveying land to Jesse Clifford was filed in
Pike County, IN . All of Jesse's children are listed: David J., John J.,
Jesse G., Benoni S., Candis, Hannah Ritter, Nancy L., Sarah and Mary Ann.

Jesse Gross Davis Sr. and Nancy Mason had the following children:

     2 i. Wilson Davis.
3 ii. David Jackson Davis was born 1817.
4 iii. John James Davis was born Nov 22, 1818 and died Sept 5, 1898.
5 iv. Jesse Gross Davis Jr. was born 1823 and died bef 1881.
      6 v. Daughter Davis was born 1825-1830.
7 vi. Sarah Davis was born Feb 11, 1827 and died June 3, 1896.
