imperium

A very religious album from Current 93 and perhaps, the only album in which you can hear Tibet singing for real (and in one of the songs, shrieking, as though in pain). Tibet's lyrics are suplemented with a lot of quotes from the bible and Christ has a major role on the theme. The common theme on all the songs is deathandsuffering.

However, it is not quite easy to conclude what Christ represents for Tibet. In an interview he made it clear that christianity (as any other organised religion) is just a means for control. Faith and hope for something better and greater after death than what this world can offer comes to mind. Some of the songs are nice and simple (that is, very generic and easy to understand in the context) whereas others seem very personal and unreachable (without lessening the effect the songs manage to have on the listener).

Music-wise the songs are simple. Most prominent instruments on the album are guitar, bass and violin, but the sound is still very different from his later releases. His use of electronics has changed quite a lot since then. Unfortunately, the CD-booklet does not offer any names as to guest appearances on the album. Perhaps he has done at least most of the composing by himself.

In all, though the lyrics and music are not yet as refined as in his later works, the ingeniousity of Tibet is already coming out. The album is very enjoyable and has a message. Life is not without end, but death is no ending.

sorrow arises from all beauty
from all beauty arises fear
when all beauty is given up
neither sorrow nor fear exist
and the law is imperium
