BALTIMORE Nameless evermore a mysterious stranger left at Edgar Allan Poe's grave a bottle of fine French cognac and a red rose each for Poe, his wife and his aunt Maria Clemm, buried side by side. For decades the black-clad stranger in Jan 19's wee hours marked the birthday of the father of the modern horror story. The first tribute was in 1949, 100 years after Poe's death. Witnesses braving freezing temperatures outside Westminster Church beside the tiny brick walled cemetery saw just after 2 a m the stranger appear noiselessly around the side of a building and enter the cemetery's back gate. Realizing who he was he was already in the shadows. The man leaned over Poe's grave and left the tribute, looked around, touched Poe's gravestone, then disappeared.
