There are many castles in Trentino
, all combining to witness our feudal history. These castles were built
both as homes for the powerful, and also as defensive fortresses controlling
this territory that was a gate-way and link between the latin and germanic
worlds, between Papacy and Central Europe.
They represented the feudal
order that owed obeisance to the Prince Bishop in Trent.
A castle here usually included
a tower or keep, surrounded by the main residential buildings and by a
complete circle of fortified walls. This structure chamged over the centuries
to include fortification and artistic decoration (above all in the fifteenth
ad sixteenth centuries) , under stylistic influence from the Tyrol, Venice
and Lombardy.
Each castle is a witness to
its own history and to the cultural influences that acted there, and has
its own special architectural and artistic characteristics, though always
inserted in the alpine scenery that identifies the region.
Among the finest and most suggestive
: the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trent, the Castle at Avio, Castel Beseno,
Castel Toblino and many other.
