Brad Payne was born in Gillette, Wyoming. He learned to play the guitar at the age of 7
while living in Vernal, Utah. He immediately played along with his sister's America and
John Denver albums. Brad began serious songwriting at the age of sixteen which inspired
a hitchhiking adventure to New Orleans. Along with his best friend, Brad played guitar in
the streets for money. Their safe return with padded pockets planted the seed that knew
no roots. Brad had realized his dream, "have guitar-will travel". Playing in a few local
bands and at church functions, Brad appeased his desires in a small Texas town until he
graduated High School . Brad drifted from college to band to job to college until he joined
the Coast Guard in '86. There, despite a slight attitude problem that was quickly adjusted,
Brad spent 7 years writing songs about the ship he was on and the people he met. During
this period of time, Brad had the opportunity to play with several bands, perform street
music in the subways of Boston, but most importantly gained a sense of respect that only
a "tour of duty" can provide. Brad exited the Guard honorably in a small town in
Northeast North Carolina where he began putting the pieces of his dream together.
Spending his time playing and writing on the outerbanks, fate drew the necessary people
and equipment Brad needed to get on the road. With his faithful dog Gunner sitting beside
him in an old RV he purchased from a widowed missionary , they pull the trailer that
clearly states who they are, "Brad Payne-have guitar will travel".
