Dead Man on Campus

After inventive SAT-based opening credits, the latest entry from MTV Films slides gradually downhill telling the tale of two college buds looking to capitalize on an arcane university policy that grants a 4.0 average to anyone whose roommate commits suicide during the term. Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do, American Werewolf in Paris) looks a little too old as the scholarly Josh, who discovers sex and all kinds of bad habits his first time away from home. Mark-Paul Gosselaar (TV’s “Saved By the Bell”) is chronically failing rich-kid Cooper, whose longsuffering father is about to install him into the family toilet-cleaning empire. Together they seek a likely candidate not to survive through finals. Lightweight campus comedy suffers from occasional mean-spiritedness, seeking humor in despair, drugs and gunshot wounds, and a script by four first-time writers, but displays inventive direction now and then.
