Author: Judith Williams
A fairy girl once came to me, as I slept, or so I thought
She took my hand, and drew me up, whispering secrets I had sought
Oh, heart of hearts, dream of dreams, love of loves
Why am I enchanted so, lost in these starlight streams?
Can I be a mere person? a mortal lady? Is it true?
I feel so much like a fairy, and I wish to dance with you
She examined me more closely, sprinkling dust into my hair
You're not so different from me, you know, look closer if you dare.
"My eyes, can you see in them, the little fairy girl inside?
Can you come and hide and seek with me? Give me a piggy back ride?
Don't talk, just quietly listen, and I'll tell you something sweet
When you walk this close to a fairy, you suddenly lose your feet!"
Just let it happen, don't be afraid, there's nothing here to fear
I'll carry you on my wings, sweet friend, you don't even have to steer!
I'll show you many secrets here, the things we hold so dear
We only share these special things with ones that will truly hear."
"Look down now at the world below, doesn't it make you want to laugh?
They think they know it all...but they really don't know half
We are the real ones, the special fairies and the elves
We can choose to be real, or to sit there, glass trinkets on their shelves!"
Such foolish ones, the humans, thinking we are only from a silly tale
I fear for them, you know. They do not know they're doomed to fail
I caution you, my friend, not to speak of this magical place
For if you do, your enchantment will die! We will disappear without a trace!"
I flew with her all night, it seemed, and treasured all there shown
I awoke the next morning, feeling so strangely aware of places I had flown
Remembering in secret, my midnight flight, enchanted by a fairy queen,
Never telling a soul, I am blessed to return to "places I've never been"
Now and then, she still visits me, happily flying around the room
Sometimes I see her hiding, deep inside the mushrooms
She giggles in her childlike way, calling me back to her land of the wee
I wonder sometimes, if it is only a dream, or if it is true that she is me
