Well, I was right about being awake all night. My parents, however, did the same.
We packed one suitcase too many, IMO. Mom listened to Aunt Susie's tip of "I pack food in a suitcase to eat there." -and that was the heaviest one of all. Plus my suitcase, plus theirs, plus a bag (smaller) for everything that didn't fit into the other suitcases. Mom and I were stuck trying to haul four suitcases plus three carryon and her purse around all day. Owwwww, my hands.
The flight was uneventful- i.e. we didn't crash, thank God. Contrary to the in-flight mag (which claimed we'd be seeing The Truman Show), the in-flight movie turned out to be Titanic.
Yeah, I know. I was finally cornered into watching it.
My review? (Major spoilers if anyone still cares)
I wasn't as scared as I thought I'd be.
It was an okay flick, but not that great. I didn't really think Leo and Kate were the most romantic couple of all time (they were okay . . . but I've seen better). Most of the other characters aren't developed that well for me to care if they drowned. And what was up with Rose, a smart chick, just completely losing all her sense and brains after making whoopee with Jack? Even HE was calling her stupid. Let's see, she passes up TWO lifeboats, keeps lurking in the bottom of the ship until the water's up to her nose and there's all kinds of electrical problems . . . if this is what losing the big V does for some people, then we really oughta be promoting abstinence more. It'll save lives if any more boats sink.
In short, other than the technical expertise and L&K, would the flick have been such a big deal? I don't think so- although I may have missed some stuff due to plugged ears/crappy headsets, and Dad shoving by me to pee (it figures that whoever gets the window seat is the one who pees the most).
I'd been in a pretty good mood starting out, but by trip's end I was getting a little cranky (can you tell?), not to mention tired (those suitcases!).
My first impression of Hawaii- well, Oahu- from the plane was "Hmm, that's it?" Seemed pretty normal. The airport is pretty simple, but has a ton of shops (which I must check out later). I was somewhat suprised that there were sights that were "familiar"- Honolulu has some dumpy areas like everywhere else. (Some places only consist of dumpy areas!) Waikiki is gorgeous, reminds me a lot of San Diego in layout. Of course, I saw all these stores I'm dying to enter. And of course, I didn't get in any today (Dad won't let us now). We didn't do anythin because by the time we got up to our condo (which is also lovely- living room/table, kitchen with big counter that I love, parents' bedroom and a bath. Great balcony view.) we were all tired. We all decided to nap for about forty-five minutes- which somehow turned into two hours.
9:30 p.m.: Went out driving for awhile, then spent a half-hour trying to find the Hard Rock Cafe (I collect their shirts). I bought a tie-dyed shirt, making my total 8 in all. Then drove around more, went to an ABC store (kinda a general store- they're on every block) for milk and postcards, then home.
Total # of items bought today:
1 pair rabbit earrings, SF airport, $5
1 HRC T-shirt, $20
10 postcards, $2 (half for me, half to mail)
Also got Demma the spoon she requested.
