9/17- Rainbow over Honolulu

My Soap-Operatic Life

The day started with a rainbow- outside our balcony, the biggest and brightest I've ever seen. Huge, bright, full-sized, arching over the nearby buildings. Absolutely beautiful!

The day started with a trip to Iolani Palace- a cool place to go, I liked it. My first palace. Mom made friends there also (she does that everywhere). It's such a crime that the monarchy was involuntarily ousted and Hawaii annexed.

Next: Submarine ride! I always wanted to go on one- this was a great improvement from the ride at Disneyland- you actually go 100 feet down and see fish that move! We also saw (very lucky) a huge manta ray, huge turtle, and a big shark, plus two barracudas that swum on top (one followed the sub all day!)

After that we wandered around for a bit until we could go on the dinner cruise (package deal). Mom took my picture with a large wooden sailor and said, "Look, Jen finally got a man!" Greeeat, there's a pic to send out to all the relatives.

As for the dinner cruise- it had a bad moment, but otherwise good. The bad point being seasickness- Mom got seasick about an hour into the cruise, I started getting nauseous for awhile at dinner, but at least I didn't barf and could still eat some. I've never been seasick before, but apparently a catamaran REALLY rocks you.

The best part? The dancing. They had three gorgeous hula dancers doing dances. And yes, there was a lesson portion, and yes, I got pulled up. And I did good- the dancers were admiring me all night. Dad said that one of them was watching me to see how to do the Macarena. I've got "We're Going To A Hookie-Lau" (I'm guessing at the spelling) going through my head.

After the hula show it was a rock show, the dancers changed clothes (poodle skirts) and went out encouraging people to dance- I got called, and boy did I answer. Had a great time, chatted with the girls a bit- I wanted to talk with them a little more but a little hard to do that on the floor. I was thrilled that dancers liked my dancing! I'm so used to how it works in the ballet world, where I'm crud and looked down upon. And you're not nauseous when you're dancing, I discovered. I was in such a good mood at the end I just totally went off into a weird interpretive mix of ballet and modern stuff. And no one was around to laugh at me! Ha ha!!! I love dancing with strangers! Total freedom! Our neighbor at the table said that a. my dancing was "interesting" (hmm, I guess that translates into weird) and b. if I dyed my hair black I could work as a dancer. Awwww.

To top the night off, I baptized my new bikini in the pool. Very cold pool. I looked lovely as I flashed goosebumps. Nobody else was in there, so I did what I do whenever I've got a pool to myself- ballet dancing underwater (seriously, it makes standing on your toes MUCH easier!). This time I also tried hula dancing underwater. God, I really want hula lessons!
