9/18- Underwater

My Soap-Operatic Life

Did about two things today other than breakfast- Dad threw a fit afterwards. Geez, can't he go one day without throwing a fit and ruining things?

Anyway: Today I went snorkeling at Haumana Bay= which I'd highly recommend to people, it's a good spot. I thought I'd be good at that since what I hate most about swimming is opening my eyes underwater and not being able to breathe. Right?

I'd never swum in the ocean before. Yeah, sad for a California native- but Dad hates beaches and I never got to go. The water was really the perfect temperature (much better than the pool temp!), and I had fun bobbing up and down on the waves. It musta taken me a half-hour to get used to putting my head underwater and knowing I could still breathe- SO not what I'm used to. Those were the parts I liked.

The parts I didn't like? The salt- the guy told me to put soap on the lenses and wash it out in the ocean- MISTAKE. The snorkel was attached to the mask, I couldn't avoid getting it wet- and covered in salt! I started to get sick to my stomach from it being in my mouth.

The other one I'm sure y'all will find silly. I'm pretty much afraid of fish, due to traumatic childhood memories of goldfish jumping out of the tank and/or dying. And they're usually pretty ugly. In short, I fear fish being around me and not tanked.

Mom had gotten me an underwater camera to take pictures of the fish- so objectively I knew there should be fish there. I forgot for awhile though as I was trying to get up the nerve to stick my face under. And I finally did it! Floating underwater I saw a coral reef...and then a fish- a relatively BIG fish I'd like to emphasize, computer-sized- swam by a foot away from me, right under me.

I panicked. Started thrashing to get them the HELL away from me, and to get the hell away from them. And that's about what I did the rest of the time. I'd see a fish and swim the hell away! Heck, I saw whole SCHOOLS of the big ones and really lost it, while my head was OUT of the water. And it's real difficult to take pictures of fish when you can't stand to be around them- waste of $16.

I might snorkel again, you never know. In a pool, or somewhere with less live stuff in it.

Our other activity was a big block party goin' on for the Aloha Festival tonight. We got to leave Dad home, and we acted like sailors out on furlough. Music, leis, food, and uninterrupted SHOPPING! Mom got a necklace and earrings (then went broke), I got two more postcards, a flower necklace ($1) and bracelet ($3), and an opal ring ($7), plus bought Mom a lei after she begged. She owes me $8 now, but I know I'm not going to get it. She has even less $ left than me ($20. I have $3 more!). Didn't help that we saw stuff we want to get later- dresses (I'd still like another Hawaiian dress), some very cute earrings ($11-19) and more flower hair clips. Why can't the Money Fairy arrive?

Two more things:

1. I got to see Luann today and I loved it! The scene: Luann is sitting with Miguel and Aaron shows up.
"Luann?"
"Aaron!"
"I've been wanting to talk to you."
"How was your summer? Did you enjoy Maine?"
"I had three months to think- and I thought mostly about you."
And Luann's killer line- "How nice. Keep that up for 6 more years and we'll be even."

Perfect. We've all got a guy like that. Heck, I've had several.

2. I want to move to Hawaii after college instead of San Diego. Seriously.
