My Soap-Operatic Life

Today's theme: Sneaking around and buying stuff on credit, then hiding it from the Dad Police.

Today's places:

1. Queen Emma's Summer Palace: A very small place that really couldn't be called a palace and wouldn't really be a huge place to visit (for more than 5 minutes), except due to Aloha Festival stuff they were having a craft fair and concert. Both of those weren't a huge deal either. But I went in the gift shop and found this book, Hawaiian Names- English Names (more on this later), that upon flipping through it, I desperately wanted. Mom wanted a Hawaiian-English dictionary. But could either of us get them? Hell no, Dad Cop said, we'd never read 'em. =(

2. Bishop Museum. Everyone makes a big stink about this place. Well, if you really love old little wooden tools and knickknacks in cases, plainly arranged, I suppose it's great. Not liking those too much, I wasn't really into anything (except for a few clothes displays and one thing on island formation). The best stuff about the museum is the extra stuff. They had two hula shows going on (I've seen a hula show every day here!) and a planetarium (the one part I really wanted to see) that did two shows- "Journey By Starlight" and "Light Years From Andromeda." The first one is much better- how people came to settle on islands, experimental archaeology, and how to navigate using the skies. The other one is a textbook as a slide show. "A light beam leaves Andromeda and goes X# of light years. On a small planet, an Ice Age begins. And the light continues to travel. The cave people start to watch the moon. And the light goes on." Dumb.

They also had lei making. I really wanted to do this. We found out about a place that gave lessons last night, but Mom wouldn't let me go, making up excuses and saying that Queen Emma's would have it. They did not. Bishop did... but it cost an extra $15. My God, what a ripoff- forget it! Grrr...

Found three items I wanted in the giftshops- 1 good luck Japanese cat that I think is adorable (they have some in Davis, I always wanted some, saw them all over here, but none for sale except here), the Hawaiian dictionary and the Hawaiian names book! I got Mom to charge them and we had to sneak 'em out past Dad. How I'm going to hide these possessions later on I don't know.. but whatever.

Anyway, to the book. It was done by a woman who researched name meanings and how Hawaiian names are created (letter substitution basically)- and she discovered that lots of them made no sense, or meant something dreadful. Unfortunately, Kinipela means "a multitude of fertilizer or decomposing flesh." My God, that is BAD.

Her theory is that you research the meaning of your English name and then find a word with a similar meaning in Hawaiian.

Options for Jennifer (white or fair one) are:
Hina goddess of the moon.
Lamalama person of fair complexion/bright, animated, and vivacious.
A'ia'i bright as moonlight, fair, and brilliant.
I can't say the last one at all, although the sentiments are nice, and I can't sound like two animals that spit.

The options for my middle name (goddess of the moon again) are:

Hina (already done)
Mahina moon, moonlight
Ko^nane bright moonlight (the ^ is over the o)

Trying to approximate my last name came out like this:
Ruth (vision of beauty or friend): Hihi 'o o ka nani or Hoaloha
Ford (river crossing): Ala'au

So, if we try to avoid being redundant, my name comes out to Hina Mahina Hoaloha'ala'au.

Okay, place #3: Dole plantation- the gift shop and giant maze, anyway. They have the world's largest maze there- 1.7 miles, and with a giant pineapple (out of plants) in the middle. I survived the maze (and had Mom sneak around to get me a T-shirt proclaiming so).

It's amazing. There are six sections of the maze, and you have to find a box holding a stamp in each one and stamp your timecard. Some were much easier to find than others. It took me 42 minutes. I was quite embarrassed to discover that a. it's supposed to take 15-30 to go through, and b. the fastest times were 5 minutes! I bet they're locals and go there constantly or something- cheaters.

After that I browsed the gift shop, got Mom to get me the shirt, plus I bought some cute lil' flower earrings.

One more thing I'd like to say before I go: Tonight I realized that once again, I am free of my lust to have a guy. I'm so happy to be back there in peaceville again, I had such a short stay there before.

Let's check my record: Obsessively lust after guys for years, then get over it for maybe 3 weeks, then I finally feel what it's like to be normal. The second a guy shows interest though, and zap! It's back to Loonyland, full speed ahead, do not pass go, do not collect $200, over the cliff and crashing. Brilliant. When anyone shows interest I completely lose it. This must stop.

And just days ago I was thinking that I couldn't remember what it felt like to be free. Well, I'm back now, and planning to try to never jump off into Boyland again. I dunno if anything will happen in the fall, but either way I am gonna stay unattached emotionally. I don't need this crap in my life.
