My Soap-Operatic Life

"Belt your family. It's the law." -Sign at a car dealership in Maryland to announce new seat belt legislation
I'm just going to cut and paste what I e-mailed my mom about yesterday to save some time. Red is Mom, yellow is me, blue is stuff I added in for the entry:

Hi Jen! How did things go today? I am trying to be good and am writing to you instead of calling tonight. Did you talk to Sarah today/and or see her? I hope she is doing ok emotionally.

What happened with Sarah: She came over at 12:30, and we went to Evan, Mike, and Adrian's apartment- which is fabulous. Hung out there for a while, then we went to the bookstore and the boys and I bought our books. I had to buy 13 books for English! I don't think I want to tell you how much they were even used, but I got off easy compared to the boys having to spend $300 on books they can't sell back. Went to Jack in the Crack, then back to their apartment and watched Undercover Blues. I had to go back to the dorm for a meeting about 7:30.

I had a great time yesterday. It was so great to be around friends again that I could talk to! Out of the dorm insanity- god, I'm gonna miss them this year. I'm going to be soooo happy when Sarah comes back here!

Also saw Jensen in the bookstore- he walked by me, I said hi (Mom would be proud). He said hi back, but I don't think the interest is mutual here. (Sigh) I was very silly, I left the guys early just to go to the "mandatory" meeting of our floor so I could look at him. I wonder if he was looking at me when I wasn't looking at him? (Oh, stop it, Jen, you're just silly)

As for her marital problems . . . besides the fact that she's decided to stay in school and he hasn't (she was annoyed that he has no ambition to make more than $7 an hour), well, apparently Hardeep has developed a terrible, terrible temper. He wanted Sarah to throw out her old photos of the boys because he was jealous, and he got incredibly angry a lot (his parents told Sarah she should stay in the kitchen and cook and be very quiet when he yelled, and she was NOT gonna do that), and she said he hit her a few times and threatened to kill her and himself (she says she knew he wasn't serious- oh, come on). On Saturday he got REALLY mad (she wouldn't say about what) and smashed up their apartment, broke furniture, smashed holes in the walls, the police had to come in. She moved out of there and back to her parents' house. Hardeep has called her house, but her parents have told him to go away and she hasn't talked to him (the police told her not to). She doesn't know what's going to happen with the marriage (she has removed her ring and cleaned out their joint account though), but she does plan to come back to school winter quarter (yay!) and she's mentioned looking for an apartment.

I am so shocked that Hardeep could get like that. He NEVER acted like that before, ever! Emotionally, I'm not sure if I can judge. She seemed to be acting pretty normal, but she did mention things from time to time in conversation. She said she "sorta" wants to come back to him- she'd better not!

How was the karoke party?

Well, the machine broke, so it became a swing-dance party. I don't know how, so I didn't do it. It was okay . . . all these people showed up and only a few knew how to do it.

I was too shy to just grab some frosh and do it- then again, I don't like couples dancing all that much. I'm not used to dancing with guys after all my years of ballet/modern/jazz, except for those high school dances- which were more like sanitized groping than dancing. Saw Jensen in the crowd, but he left early (sigh).

Not much going on here. Hope you are doing okay with your new roommates. I'm sure by now you have met the last girl in the suite. I hope you can all be friends of some sort.

Hmmm. The sophomore girls seem nice, although pretty quiet and by themselves a lot (they said they're not social. I think I can believe it.). The freshmen, however, are annoying me. I went out last night and when I got back I found "Sex in progress! Keep out!" written on the door. I tried to play along- wrote "Yeah, you'll ruin the mood!" on the door- but it still pissed me off. Like I'd tell anyone if I was. Somehow I suspect they did it. And then it started pouring and thundering and lightening around 12:30 when Megan came in, and I went out to see how bad it was raining (just out in the hall, not outside), she yells, "What are you doing, you freak?" Gee, that was NICE. I really don't think I like them.

Did you try to get in touch with Kiwini?

NO. He wants to get in touch with me, he's got more info on me than I do him. And if he doesn't, then screw it.

I'm okay . . . annoyed with the freshmen (I'm considering changing rooms, except I don't know if I'd get to live with anyone better, and I don't want to move all my stuff again), hoping to God I meet more people in this dorm that I can hang out with and eat with- it was soooo nice to be with friends yesterday. As for my little crush on the RA, I don't think it's very mutual after all, but that's probably a good thing. The way things are going now, every nice guy I see turns out to be jerky. I don't really like the idea of dating someone who can bust you for misbehavior anyway.

Although I signed up to be on social committee just because they said the RA's would be there. I am very silly, I think. Toooooo boy crazy. I've got that line from Dirty Dancing in my head- something like "Oh, aren't we the little joiner?" How adorable, I start joining the committees and showing up for the events just because he's there. I went to Games Night on Sunday for that reason (got involved in a screaming match known as Guesstures), only to eyeball Jensen walking in and out (mostly out) a lot. How ridiculous. Oh well, if I do decide to chase, there isn't any better way to do it.

Oh, and when I went to check the job board yesterday, they had NO writing jobs available at the Aggie!!!! I am so disappointed! If I can get back to campus tomorrow I may go by the office and check, or at least look on the Internet if it's listed there.

Managed to get the Internet job search thing working today, and in case you care, I'm going to bookmark the stuff I found interesting or that I was elgible for. I should call that number they have listed about this stuff, but knowing me I probably won't. Well, maybe tomorrow, I don't have anything else to do. Anyway, the jobs are:

* Davis Commnunity TV production intern- help do TV programs, produce/direct production. My second favorite.
* Niche Publications editorial/production intern- work for two beer mags (this one is not my favorite choice), will have published clips, edit stuff, solicit artwork, mail stuff, will produce at least one department. Last choice, since I don't like beer.
* UC Davis Magazine writing/editing intern- this one's PAID- write alumni stuff, interviews, people profiles, type, file (however, asks for "proficient typing skills"- I'm not so sure I'm proficient enough. This one's my favorite.
* America's Review editorial intern- it's a "high literary" fiction/poetry mag- mail, scanning/typing, work with editorial board (apparently you must agree with them on everything to get the job, according to the listing). I'm not too sure about this one.

I've got to go to work soon, so that's the end of this entry.
