Forms of Divination

Before it move, hold it, Before it go wrong, mould it, Drain off water in winter before it freeze, Before weeds grow, sow them to the breeze. You can deal with what has not happened, can foresee Harmful events and not allow them to be. Though—as naturally as a seed becomes a tree of Arm-wide girth— There can rise a nine-tiered tower from a man’s handful Of earth Or here at your feet a thousand-mile journey have birth, Quick action bruises, Quick grasping loses. Therefore a sane man’s care is not to exert One move that can miss, one move that can hurt. Most people who miss, after almost winning, Should have ‘known the end from the beginning.’ --Lao Tzu

Runes:
They're kind of expensive to buy. I didn't buy mine. I'm a cheap-skate. But perhaps it's better to make your own anyhow. I just took a branch, (a fairly straight branch) And made sure it was about the right circumference I wanted the runes to be (as I was just going to make them round, by cutting them straight off the branch). Choosing what kind of wood you want is rather important (if you're making them from wood), because different wood has different properties. I chose elm, because it is the wood of the Goddess. For more info on wood and its magickal properties go here After I cut the branch (using a hand saw and a clamp), I took off the bark with a pocket knife. Then I let the wood dry, and sanded. I decided carving was too difficult for me, and used oil paint to paint the rune symbols on the runes.

My favorite method using the runes is the nine rune cast.
You pick nine runes from your pouch. Hold them between your hands for a moment, and focus on your question. Scatter the runes on the table, floor, or cloth if you have on. Read the runes which land face up first. These will relate to the current situation and the circumstances which led to it. Mostly, runes lying in the centre are the most immediately relevant, while those lying around the edges are less important, or represent more general influences. Runes that are close together or even touching often compliment eachother, or may even represent a single thing, while runes which fall on opposite sides of the pattern frequently represent opposing influences. Occasionally, a rune will land completely off the cloth or fall off the table. Some people consider such runes to be particularly significant, while others ignore them completely. I don't want to go into anymore depth on this, so if you'd like to learn more about runes, or have no idea what I'm rambling about check out my links page.

tarot cards:
The keltic cross meathod is the most common meathod. It is easy to remember, but I get tired of seeing it all the time. So I'm going to tell you some other ways.
YIN YANG SPREAD
Description
The Yin Yang spread sheds light on any situation where two parties do not see eye-to-eye on a given issue. These could be any two individuals, groups, organizations, teams or some combination. The parties disagree, but they are not necessarily hostile to each other. They are simply (!) stuck on a problem that needs resolution. The Yin Yang spread is based on the familiar circular symbol made up of two shapes - one black and one white - defined by a central line. In his translation of the I Ching or Book of Changes, Richard Wilhelm states that
With this line, which in itself represents oneness, duality comes into the world, for the line at the same time posits an above and a below, a right and left, front and back - in a word, the world of the opposites.
In a conflict, there are two opposites that together form a whole which is the situation itself. The Yin Yang spread has two sections that correspond to the positions or sides of the conflict (call them Sides "A" and "B"). They mirror each other and are separated by a line of cards. The Two Sides - Cards 3-10 In this spread, Cards 3-5-7-9 represent Side A, and Cards 4-6-8-10 represent Side B. When the Yin Yang spread is laid out, these cards are placed alternately - one on the left, then one on the right - until all eight have been placed. Before you do a Yin Yang spread you should decide which person or group is Side A and which is Side B. If you are one of the parties, then you should be Side A. The Dividing Line The dividing line is where the opposing positions meet. Cards 1 and 2 define the heart of the matter - the fundamental conflict. These cards describe the dynamic between A and B that has created the specific problem. Card 11 holds the key to the conflict as a whole. It offers guidance to both parties on how to resolve their differences mutually. Card 12 is the projected outcome if matters continue as they are.
Positions
Many of the cards in the Yin Yang spread are similar to those in the Celtic Cross spread.
•Position 1 - factor contributing to the problem (see Card 1) •Position 2 - factor contributing to the problem (see Card 2 ) •Position 3 - official or public position for Side A. Impression A wants to make. How Side B perceives Side A.
•Position 4 - official or public stance for Side B. Impression B wants to make. How Side A perceives Side B.
•Position 5 - what Side A consciously thinks and feels. Side A's ideal outcome. (see Card 5)
•Position 6 - what Side B consciously thinks and feels. Side B's ideal outcome. (see Card 5)
•Position 7 - what Side A unconsciously thinks and feels. Deeper motivation. (see Card 3)
•Position 8 - what Side B unconsciously thinks and feels. Deeper motivation. (see Card 3)
•Position 9 - guidance for Side A. What A should do to reach its ideal. (see Card 9)
•Position 10 - guidance for Side B. What B should do to reach its ideal. (see Card 9)
•Position 11 - guidance for both Sides A and B. Key to understanding the conflict. How they might compromise. (see Card 9)
•Position 12 - outcome if situation continues as is. (see Card 10)

The horoscope meathod:
The cards are shuffled as normal, and a card for the querent (questioner) is chosen. The querent's card is laid in the middle. Then, in a circle around the querent's card, twelve cards are placed. The first card being the house of Aries, 2 Taurus, 3 gemini, 4 cancer, 5 leo, 6 virgo, 7 libra, 8 scorpio, 9 sagittarius, 10 capricorn, 11 aquarius, and 12 Pisces. Then each card is read in relation to the house.
Aries: Personality, Potential, constitiution
Taurus: financial affiars, material possesions
gemini: mental activity, relatives, communications
cancer: home and family, the father, end of life
leo: children, love affairs, pleasures, speculations
virgo: health, employees, work, food
libra: marriage, partnerships, enemies
Scorpio: death, legacies, sex, occult experiences
sagittarius: Philosophy, religion, dreams, ideals
capricorn: profession, public life, government, honor, mother
Aquarius: hopes, wishes, organizations, associates
Pisces: seclusion, self-undoing, institutions, secret enemies
At first you may have a little trouble seeing which cards are reversed, but in time you'll realize which is which.

Scrying (looking into something to see the future)
For some reason this method eludes me. I've never had enough ¿patience? to get it to work. Generally, you can scry in anything. Smoke, flame, water, crystal balls. Usually it's done under the full moon. Sometimes, if it's done in water, a piece of silver is placed at the bottom of the bowl or whatever is being used. then you just look into the water, concentrate, and wait...(and in my case wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait--you get the picture)

Tea leaves:
This is how I've always done it, and how I've been told, but perhaps there's a better way...I don't know. This can work with lots of things really. casting stones, dropping candle wax onto water etc..
I generally put a couple drops of water in the bottom of a white cup, add a few tea leaves, and then swirl the water by moving the cup in a circular motion, then I set the cup down, and watch for a picture to take shape. (much of this is left to the imagination. A picture that forms from the tea leaves to you, will look like nothing to another. My guess is, maybe you're both right, but the leaves give you an outlet, for psychic powers, that otherwise your subconsious would overlook) The shape you see is a symbol of what will be. Perhaps you see the shape of a turtle, then maybe things will be moving slowly for you in the future..=)

Rhapsodomancy
The use of poetry, song lyrics, or pretty much any book you want, for divination. It originatied in Greece and Rome where they used the books "Odyssey" by Homer, and Virgil's "the Aenid".
A question is asked aloud, then the book is opened to a random page, and the first line looked apon is taken to be the answer to your question.

Cromniomancy
(done on the first of December)
If you are unmarried and desire to learn the name of the woman or man to be your future lover of marriage mate, take some onions and upon each one, carve or write a different name as you recite the following magickal incantation:
Onion sprout reveal to me, the name of my true love to be.
Place onion near a fire and keep an eye on them over the next few days. the man/woman that sprouts first will most likely be your true love....
