Introducing myself

As you can infer from the title of this page, my name is Maurizio. I am 40 years old; I was born in Milan ( Italy ) the 24th of December 1963 but at the age of 5 months I was moved to London ( England ), where I remained 10 years. After another brief parenthesis in Milan, I was transplanted in Rome, where I live since 1974. Even if the air isn't very wholesome and some people have no manners (typical in big agglomerations), the variety of services (improvable but however present), the choice of opportunities, the many pleasant people, together with the city's intrinsic beauty and its lucky geographical position, are still able to keep people like me. 

Interests

Gardening: I reproduce and take care of many types of ornamental plants, soaring from the small Leontopodium Alpinum to the majestic Strelitzia Reginae. I'm also interested in therapeutic properties of plants.

Travelling: Although I love to drive both cars and motorbikes, I prefer to travel by train, by bus and by ship. It is very nice not to be slave of one's own vehicle ! It's nice to enjoy the journey, alone or with fellow-travellers, to make new acquaintances, relaxing one's mind, looking around, without having to drive. Destinations have mainly been healthy places (mountain and seaside) of the Italian peninsula, of its main islands, of Corsica and, some years ago, of Yugoslavia.

Photography, from reportage to still-life, in color or black and white; I print my black and white photos manually, preferably on double weight fiber/baryta base paper, realizing tonings and manual colouring; I restore photographs and started elaborating images with the computer. I also experimented film photo-restitution.

Electronics: various fields, but I' m mainly interested in automatic testing and control systems.

Building and restoring various objects: furniture, old photo cameras with scanty commercial value but that it is nice to see working...

Computer Science: just enough for bringing up to date my utilitaristic knowledge. 
Personal message: should Luca P. (if I remember his name well), whom I used to meet at the swimming pool till six years ago and then met only once on the first floor of a well known store in a well known square of our area, read this page of mine, I'd like him to accept my special greetings, to send me his greetings and, eventually, let me read the C-language book I lent him before reading it.

Music: I listen to all kinds of music uninterruptedly; when I was a little boy I played various instruments; I sing in a wonderful choir and occasionally I play my MIDI keyboard.

Writing: Diaries, instructions, protests, letters, postcards, puns, my Home page etc.

Sports: various, when I was young!... At present I practice Karate. 

Other Interests: Making myself useful to my fellow creatures and to community, even if some people reduced my inclination for endless availability.

REMARKS

Let's not forget that the quality of our life depends on the quality of the environment in which we live. We must never justify ourselves by saying that "everybody does it" or "it is not I who caused the damage"! Neither can we pretend not to see or avoid to reprimand people when necessary.

Although the political class should do more and better, by using a little rational imagination and fearless reforms, with the aim of eliminating moodiness and lack of work (starting, at least in Italy, in the employment offices, which -more often than not- look like a recording of the jobless, rather than anything else), I believe that every single citizen should help his neighbours to accomplish some of their projects. I don't think it is sufficient to tell your relative or friend: "try to do something" or "make sure to finish what you started". Those who have more experience or possibilities should dedicate a little of their time to those who have good ideas, good will, but have some doubts and/or some problems. It is necessary to transfer our own energy and knowledge so that other people can continue and develop what we started. Should anybody have doubts, they should go ahead and ask without any restraint: the quicker they communicate, the quicker they resolve their problems.

I'd like to make a REQUEST: being a member of a blood donation group I know that there is a constant lack of blood; I appeal to any healthy person to dedicate a very little of their time to go (in the morning, with no food intake) to a blood transfusion center a couple of times per year in order to make a very useful donation. This will cost you nothing but it is vital to other people. In return they will offer you breakfast after the donation and you will, of course, get a free medical check-up, including blood analysis. It is also an occasion to meet new people. Please inform others.
