Calendar of Events

January/February

Superbowl! Superbowl of Stitches, that is. Our fundraiser for the year.

Every January, around SuperBowl time, El Segundo Blue presents a workshop fundraiser. This fundraiser usually includes a Design Kit with fabric, threads and directions. Each year we try to learn a new technique or meet a new instructor/designer. Cost includes kit, continental breakfast, lunch, door prizes, and a fun day! In addition, several members organize baskets to donate and attendees can purchase tickets to help raise money for the organizaiton. If you have a SuperBowl of Stitches suggestion or idea please contact Melinda Toppenberg or Joanne Seruto.

September

Every September El Segundo Blue presents a display of needlework at the El Segundo Library, 111 West Mariposa Avenue, El Segundo, (310) 524-2722. If you would like to help with this event please contact Joanne Seruto.

November

The El Segundo Blue Chapter has been supporting Torrance Memorial Hospitals Festival of the Trees fund raiser for many years. This involves creating ornaments to decorate a donated tree that the Festival of Trees auctions off to raise money.
Our 2008 theme is stars.
Ornaments are donated by our members. Any stitching technique is welcome! Bring your completed ornaments to any general meeting. If you are interested in helping decorate the tree or providing a larger item (tree skirt, tree topper, etc.) please contact our chairs, Sandi Ashla and Monica Fawcett.

Community Outreach

Stitching Supplies

In the last two years we have sent supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims and troops stationed in the Gulf region.
If you would like to help, you can donate stitching kits (pre-made or charts with threads/needles), charts, threads and other stitching supplies.

Shelter Support

Closer to home, travel-sized toiletries are donated to local women’s shelters.
These can be unused hotel shampoos, conditioners, soaps and other toiletries as well as purchased items like toothbrushes and hair clips.

Afghans for Angels

This program was originated and managed by Ruth Thill in Britt, Iowa. Afghans for Angels is a growing volunteer program that makes baby blankets for local hospitals as a gift to parents who have suffered the loss of their newborn child. These blankets are placed lovingly around the infant angel when held by their families for the brief time in which they said their hellos and sad good-byes. The parents are given these blankets to take home in remembrance of their child. Nothing will take the pain away for these families, but knowing that someone cared enough to make a special blanket for their precious child is certain to provide comfort. If you are interested in participating in this program, here are a few suggestions:
  • Blankets can be knitted, crocheted, quilted, or purchased and creatively decorated.
  • They need be no larger than two foot square, but larger or smaller are welcome.
  • Baby colors and delicate patterns are suggested any extra special touches are welcome such as tiny ribbons woven through the border.
Nothing will take the pain away, but your gift of love will surely make a difference.

Bring donations to any general meeting, and our outreach chairperson will arrange delivery.
