Concerning contemporary poets, he says, "During the past 35 years I would single out John Wieners, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, Larry Eigner, George Oppen, Carl Rakosi, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, Joanne Kyger, Robert Duncan and more..." as the contemporary poets most important to him. Blake, Shelley, Chaucer, Rilke, Dante, Shakespeare, Donne, Rumi, Poe, Whitman, Yeats, Pound, Jabes and more... are on his list of important poets of the past. He has not found any critic to be of importance to him.
