WORD PROCESSING - Each word processing program e g Word, WordPerfect, Lotus, etc has its own protocol (software codes) but they all read ASCII DOSTEXT because it uses only basic protocols. This is why ASCII takes less disk space, therefore the best format to paste to e-mail account and receivers' bandwidth limits. Word processors (newer versions) also convert to HTML for uploading. F3 (save as) converts. I prepare text documents offline as ASCII and convert.
Disks only hold as many files as tracks on the disk regardless of filesize. Pasting similar files together clears tracks for more files you want to download. Paste like you paste to e-mail. SHIFT and cursor, highlight what you want copied. ALT + E, copy, ALT + E paste to this or another file. Files too big you can break down to smaller ones. Keep backup copies!! Many times I'd of lost a whole file if I hadn't had backup copies. Even experts can hit wrong keys accidentally. On or offline, save often. You never know when servers or computers crash or freeze or power goes out. Accidental content deletions? ALT + E (Edit) then UNDO.
Word processors can open up to 7 windows at a time. In the topmost toolbar it says Windows. Mouse click switch back and forth between windows (containing opened files) In fact save often - I said Often - both online and off, insure against accidents. Disappearing screenfiles return clickably from the toolbar at the bottom of your screen. Exiting the Internet requires closing your word processor so you can see the thing that connects or disconnects you from the Internet, or reopen your browser if it's shut down. Save documents and edits immediately so you won't lose them if you crash!
READING E-MAIL without scrollbars, use the [up & down] cursor keys. Where there's scrollbars you can use either cursor keys or scrollbars. You can't open whole folders. You must open each message within them. E-mail opened or not deletes because accounts only allow 5 megs or so. SAVING E-MAIL ALT+F and save as. Saving Email you need a title for each document. Default title is something like "getmessage" or "read" or whatever. Use your own title or files override each other and you get on disk only the last document you saved.
DOWNLOADING Rather save to floppy instead of the hard drive. From the Internet ALT + F (File) then save as. "Save frame as" if it's in a frame. You know frames when you see them - they divide the screen into more than 1 thing, scroll or not. To scroll or save a frame click the cursor to the frame you want to save. The frame's border highlights when the cursor is in it. Only the frame the cursor is in will scroll. NOTE Clicking a checkbox or other input you click outside it to scroll. "Save frame as" appears in the ALT+F dropdown menu. Save the page to FLOPPY DISK. Saving e-mails and certain other pages saves their Javascript along with it, before and after the content. Forward to lawyers as is. You can store it in a folder. You can forward it to yourself. Downloading Internet HTML files you open them offline as HTML, convert to text, delete the javascript.
FILE EXTENSIONS like asp or cgi etc or anything else your word processor can't open (look in the location window at the top of your screen) Highlight it (hold mouse key down and drag it over what you want to copy) then open your word processor (you don't need to get off the Internet, it'll open its own window and you can click at the bottom of your screen back and forth) and paste and save files. Word to the wise: store stuff if you need to forward or refer to it often or until you post it on your site. That way it's still there if you screw up. Save to floppy with backup copies! Saving on the hard drive risks loss if you crash and have to restore. I set my browser to forward my email to web based email like Hotmail. I can access it from anywhere. If I have to restore I won't lose my mail. Check your mail often or you'll lose your account.
PREPARE E-MAIL or other letters offline. Online go to your word processor (see above) Open the file. CTRL+A is select all, it highlights the whole letter. Or highlight parts you want to send. CTRL+C copies it. Return to your e-mail window (see above) and paste!!
Reminder to Save Often
Jesus and Satan argue who's the better programer. They agree to a hold a contest with God as the judge. They sit at their computers and type furiously for several hours. Lines of code stream up the screen. Seconds before the competition ends, lighting takes out the electricity. Moments later, power is restored. God, ending the contest, asks Satan to show what he came up with. Satan, visibly upset, cries, "I have nothing! I lost it all when power went out." Very well, then, says God, let's see if Jesus fared any better. Jesus enters a command. The screen comes to life in vivid display. Voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers. Satan, astonished, stutters, "But how? . . . . I lost everything, yet Jesus' program is intact! How did he do it?" God looked at Satan and smiled, "Jesus saves!"
