If you check this box for non-HTML files you upload a jumble of symbols Rich Text Format, RTF. If you forget to check the boxes you can rename files later. Lowercase filenames are easier for visitors to key in. Most search engines aren't case sensitive anyway. I wrote this document offline, converted it to HTML (save as or the F3 key) and uploaded it. Upload HTML text files separately from other files even if they're on the same disk because of the HTM to HTML button or you convert nontext files to HTML! Highlight with shift & cursor what you want to paste. Alt E (or click edit) copy, enter. Then go where you want to copy it to even if it's to another file and do edit, paste!
Images or sound files - multimedia - Right click on it. A drop down menu appears. In the middle is view image. Save background as is at the bottom. A window opens and you save! Make your own title if you want. Soundfiles require titles. Their default is "untitled" before you download. You can hit ALT+V and view page info to find how big the file is. You can also find an image's dimensions and write them down. Reserving space - scaled down if you want - makes sure text loads even if pictures don't. Some people either don't get multimedia or turn it off to save loading time. Save as ASCII (dostext) It's read universally and takes less disk space because no format. Offline you don't need format that bad, really.
Page info is for graphics filesize and dimensions. Do this BEFORE saving the image or it says not cached and file unknown, with no file size or dimensions. If this happens try going back to the page, then clear the history list and caches. How to find them. Netscape at least: ALT + E (edit) preferences. Clear history, in navigator the default. Advanced (farther down the menu) - Caches. Use the Back button to return to the image and then to the web page.

In the menubar above the screen where it says location add the soundfile's name (to the URL of course) Enter. Click the screen anywhere there's not an active link so it turns white instead of staying blue and opening by accident another filename listed in the pulldown menu. BINGO the console appears and you got yourself a soundfile for your website. Save the soundfile - it says untitled you gotto add your own filename.
Transfer files containing sound or graphics to another site you need to transfer the sound and graphics as well. Downloading a page to disk loses all sound and graphics. Save these to disk separately. Best to keep them on separate disks anyway. Choose multimedia for small filesize, save diskspace and loading time. Upload different filetypes separately to your site even if they're on the same disk. Your computer - either your word processor or the desktop - shows filesize too, without opening the file.

Transfering pages from one site to another, visit as a visitor. Save to disk as html. Save graphics and sound files to transfer with it. Suppose somebody e-mails you a poem for your website or you write a poem. FTP uploads documents onto your website. You can't upload files directly from e-mail you must save to disk first. You can't upload text documents unless they're in HTML. After you upload your file (or even before, on your word processor) delete all the java and javascript that surrounds e-mails (and newspaper stories) when you download them. It takes up space needlessly and kicks you offline when you preview the file because the script is for the place you got them from, not the place you transfer them to. Use your own filename if you want.

If you can't edit (other than cutting) an uploaded file it means the file is too big. Try the file again smaller or as 2 or more files. Same if the file isn't entirely uploaded. Maybe it's all that surrounding javascript (see above)
LOADS SLOW? Clear the history list and caches. Netscape 4 Communicator at least: ALT + E (edit) preferences. Options in Navigator (Netscape 3) Clear history. History, the default shown, is located in the menu's "navigator" pulldown. "Advanced" menu pulldown, Caches. If this isn't an option - like on public terminals where it's deliberately removed so users can't mess around and change things - turn the computer off and then back on (cold boot) to empty caches at least. This does not harm the computer.
If somebody offers to list your website on search engines, save your money. Anybody, even the President, can submit a site to search engines. Search engine people decide which sites to list anyway.
