        THE JOUST

        Dangerous sport: here (right) Sir Collin's squire bolts on additional plate to Sir Collin's already formidable armor. In the Jousts at LRF, the New Riders of the Golden Age always jousted without shields -- meaning they received the blows from their opponent's lance directly on their chests! Consider that they are 200-pound men each wearing 100 pounds of steel plate, riding a 1000-pound warhouse galloping at each other at 60mph with the express purpose of either shattering their lance on their opponent's body or knocking their opponent out of the saddle. Now calculate the foot-pounds of pressure received at the two-inch-wide tip of their ten-foot lances. A dangerous sport, indeed!

        At the charge (left): Sir Collin and Sir Thomas take steady aim as they bear down on each other at full gallop!



        IMPACT! Sir Collin's lance breaks (right) as he scores a direct hit on Sir Thomas, while Sir Thomas only managed a glancing blow, leaving his lance intact. That put Sir Collin ahead by one point at the end of the first pass! On the second pass, both struck each other squarely -- but each failed to shatter their respective lances. On the third, and final, pass, Sir Thomas scored with a clean break on Sir Collin, who actually failed to hit at all! This, of course, made the score even: 1-1. Which, under Tournament rules, meant...
