The letter sent to artists two years ago:
Dear Artist!
An exhibition called FAX ART will be held in Við Hamarinn
Art Gallery in Hafnarfjörður Iceland from march 23rd through
april 3rd 1996.
Artists are free and welcome to participate and send material for
the exhibition. Anything "faxable" is permitted, sketches, drawings,
paintings, photos, text, ideas, thoughts or poetry. Artists may also
leave a message on the Galleries answering machine which will also be
presented at the exhibition. Needless to say, all artwork will be
presented in the name of the artist.
Art through fax machines has not been very prominent. Picturesque
qualities are often found to be destroyed through the fax. As well as
the paper used in the machines is not a very feasible ground for an
artwork. The same can be said about using answering machines for art
making. Messages left on those machines are often found to be mechanical,
robotic and inhuman. As well, many people are phobic to such things.
The art form of today is probably the internet web which calls for many
explored as well as unexplored possibilities.
Then why an exhibition with artwork through fax and conventional
telephone? We think this might be a "last chance opportunity" to try out
the artistic qualities of the machines in question. And we believe that
the outcome will be a truly exciting demonstration, of an art form still
alive whose qualities haven't been tried to it's full limits yet. We are
hoping for great participation of Icelandic as well as foreign artists.
This exhibition will be supported by sponsors so individual costs for
participation are solely the price of transmitting a fax or giving us
a call.
This letter is still on Art on the Net.
