Tuesday, October 14, 1997 -- Spending Time

Sometimes you just have to dedicate large blocks of time to little tasks. Sometimes it's the dedication of the time that was important in the first place. I spent an hour and a half at Social Security today. Five minutes of which I spent dealing with my problem. And of course, it was in an out-of-the-way part of town, so took us an hour just to drive there and back.

Two and a half hours just to get a replacement social security card.

I had one, back when i was in high school. I even think I had it my first year of college. At some point my wallet got washed, and the paper-only social security card was trash. That was 10 years ago, and I haven't needed it since.

I mean, i've got the "two forms of id" you need for your I-9 forms, and I've used to have a student id that had my social security number on it. At least it was laminated. But my new job requires the original social security card or, a duplicate, that shows how my name is spelled. So they can write the checks that way.

I've never needed that before. But then I've never worked in an industry as highly regulated as this one. In fact, something that occurred to me today, I've never worked in-house anywhere.

That is, I'm basically an MIS-type programmer. I do business reports, and work with business data. That's what I've done for most, if not all of my career. But I've never worked for the company that was going to use the reports.

I worked for a software company and developed software for other companies (but it was still business software) and then, I was a consultant, working for myself or a firm. Now, finally I'm working in-house, and I like it.

I sent my 'receipt' for a new social security card to HR, and now I should get paid tomorrow, which would be a good thing, as we used up the last of our loose change on the beach trip. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't have passed that up for the world.

Moose and Squirrel came over tonight, and played Robo Rally. I really like this game, and am thinking about programming it. Well after, massive changes, to protect their copyright, I guess. The AI's would be the hard part.

I was just glad to spend some time with Moose and Squirrel. Moose looked like a great weight had lifted off his shoulders, and Squirrel was evasive about where she was going. She was leaning towards Michigan tonight, but I wasn't sure if that was how she really felt, or her story for while Moose was around.

Either way, it was good to see them. I was worried they would disappear without me being able to say goodbye, and now they won't. We're still supposed to eat dinner with them on Thursday, so that will be the time for real goodbyes.

At some point, Marie asked Squirrel to be in the wedding. It surprised me, a little, but since it looked like she was going to be in High Point, it wasn't a bad thing. Plus it tied them to us for a little while longer. Believe me, I understood. Perhaps the wedding will keep up the contact even if she moves to Michigan. One can always hope, I guess.
