John Henry Marshall

John Henry Marshall was born in England, the third son of a duke. When he was twenty-three, he travelled to France to enter into an arranged marriage. Little did he know that he and Elizabeth would fall in love instantly. Upon returning to England, John Henry took over one of his father's estates. He and Elizabeth lived there twelve years. They invested money in several profitable ventures, using funds from Elizabeth's father and an inheritance left to John Henry by his maternal grandfather. His mother was his father's second wife. For a change of pace, John Henry moved his family to Nevada in 1860 and invested in the silver mining industry, opening several hotels and purchasing half of two profitable mines. When goldwas found in the Boise Basin in 1862, John Henry was one of the first men to invest in it. He began constructing Belleterre then, and moved his family there in 1863. He let his mines and other businesses run themselves, and started raising cattle on his new ranch. Educated for four years at Oxford, John Henry took a two-year Grand Tour. An intelligent man, he encouraged his children to read and learn to play music. He and Elizabeth educated their children in languages, music, history, etc. He sent those who wanted to go to boarding school, university, and Europe. John Henry speaks English, French, Latin, Greek, and Italian. He is of medium height, has a "beefy" build, and a deep voice. He has dark, slightly greying hair; nearly black, sparkling eyes; and a loving smile. He enjoys riding horses and being outdoors, but is increasingly inactive. He travels often for business, sometimes taking his children or grandchildren with him.
