Art history is one of my favorite topics...I have been interested in
art all of my life. When I was a sophomore in highschool, I took an art history
class and thus started my even greater interest in the subject.
It was a two year College Prep/Honor course. When I started it
that first year, I started at College Prep and my second year into it,
I went Honours all the way. (: It was such a fun and interesting class,
full of sightseeing, and visits to museums (LA County Museum, Getty Museum
in Malibu, Santa Monica...). My second year, I took the Honours Exam--hard
as hell--and scored a 4 out of 5 (very few people score a five--*patting
herself on the back*). Well, I got into JC (Junior College), I took other
Art History classes and my interest was renewed. I am now an official art
bum. (-:
I love art in general. I love paintings, scultpures, drawings, music,
the theatre, literature. All of it is art. There is no right or wrong art.
Art is art, regardless of anyone's personal opinion on it.
I love fine arts, specifically. I love most era and styles in art, whether
it is Prehistoric, Romantic, or Post-Modern. I love all nationalities of
art from German Expressionism to Surrealism to the black and white
photography in the American 1930's. I love lines, colors, lack of colors
and lines, everything. Every piece of art means something to me. Every
piece of art is special, and so is the artist.
I do have a few hates in art, but they are few in number. When I find myself
not liking a work of art, it is usually because when I view them or when
I learn about the artist, I find that the artist did not stay true to the
subject in some manner or form. And this is, merely my opinion, so take it
as you will.
[GETTY MUSEUM}I have visited several museums in Southern California, during my highschool years. One of my favorite visits was to the original J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, CA. I loved it. It is built in the style of a Roman villa, such as the kind you might have found in Pompeii. It is up on a hill, just minutes away from the beach. It is magnificent. Inside and out, the museum is gorgeous. There is a long, narrow, and shallow pool in the courtyard with shrubs and statuary about. Inside is an intricate maze of rooms, two (three?) stories high. The museum also has a herb garden off to the side of the museum. There are also small courtyards to each side of the garden each having one or two benches set to the side of a fountain. The Getty is free of charge, the only thing you might want to do before going there, is call ahead and make sure there is enough parking space. Or, just park outside the museum walls and walk up the hill, and through some gorgeous scenery, including verdant trees and a small man made brook. I am eagerly awaiting the opening of the NEW Getty. They have built another building where they are planning on housing the modern works of art that they have on hand. Presently, the original Getty Museum is closed and the new one is fully operational and a complete departure from its predecessor.
[LA COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART] They have several special exhibits every year. I went three times and they had German Expressionism, the Dutch Golden Years, and several others. It is more the usual museum build, with several seperate buildings you may go into. It does have an entree fee, but if you are a student or with a group, I believe you get a discount. Oh, and try going to Juniors, in West LA for lunch...they have the best sandwiches and they make an especially good Lox on Bagels with Cream Cheese. (:
[ARMAND HAMMER]The Armand Hammer had an exhibit of the Ottoman Empire. There, I spied a pendant (which was about 3 or 4 feet long) which was once placed above a throne of a Great Somebody, it had a ruby the size of my fist! It had jewels imbedded in the entire thing but that ruby was it's crowning glory. All the stones were roughly cut, catching the light and shadows of the room. They were magnificent.
[TOMBS OF SIPAN}One other museum I have been to was the museum at UCLA. They had an exhibit of the 'Tombs of Sipan'. That was pretty cool. It was a headphone guided walk through. The walls had cut outs of Sipan motifs. I tell you though, it was a hell of a walk up those hills at UCLA!!!!! (:
