The Hill-Billy Snipe
Hillus-Billus Gallinago
Habitat: South-Central United States...some sightings in Beverly Hills, California.
Distinguising features: Buff brown colored lines on the posterior end of this non-migratory bird.

Note the southern accent in the call: heyyaall-heyyaall-heyyaall, etc... This bird generally lives in old, run-down houses. It collects bugs to make moon-shine and then usually drinks it alone. This bird is noticeable with its buff brown colored lines down its back, extending onto its tail feathers. It flies quite frequently in a zig-zag pattern.

Hunting notes: This is a fun bird to pursue! From personal experience, it sure has the Bird House Snipe beat in terms of excitement level. The zig-zag patterned flying creates the challenge when the bird takes flight. Do note this, though: they fly similarily to the domestic chicken....not very well. With this in mind, you might want to either use a larger gunnysack or a very large butterfly net.
